WOLF END PLATE FOR BUNDLE ACCESSORIES Filed Sept. 16, 1945 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 gvwq/wfo'c Huward Wolf a 5'. Maw/246% Patented June 25, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE (Granted under the act of March 3, 1883, as amended April 30, 1928; 370 O. G. 757) 3 Claims.
The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government for governmental purposes without the payment to me of any royalty thereon.
This invention relates to end plates for bundle accessories, and in particular to end plates for accessories for the handling and shipping of cylindrical ammunition containers.
This invention represents an improvement over the prior art devices which comprised clover leafshaped end plates integrated by means of a central bolt. These end plates were fabricated by stamping and presented in the finished condition solid end faces, with the exception of the central hole for the reception of the integrating bolt.
I have discovered that such end plates may be more simply and cheaply fabricated Without sacrificing the necessary qualities of strength and durability by constructing the periphery alone of the clover leaf from rolled material and completing the plate by inserting strengthening ribs to maintain the periphery thereof.
The specific nature of the invention as well as other objects and advantages thereof will clearly appear from a description of a preferred embodiment as shown in the accompanyin drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of open work end plate according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of a modification.
Figure 5 is a section taken on the line C -5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a section taken on the line BB of Figure 4.
Figure '7 is a diminished view in elevation of the complete assembly.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference Figure 7 shows the use to which the end plates of the invention are put. The end plates I hold between them cylindrical packages 2 which. of course, may contain any article but in their customary employment contain articles of ammunition such as trench mortar projectiles. In the prior art these plates I presented a solid face in plan view.
Referring to Figure 1 there is shown one form of the invention wherein the end members are shown in open work structure. The periphery comprises a rolled strip 3 having a central strengthening rib 4 and an inturned flange 5. The strip is formed by any appropriate means into the desired clover leaf shape an the ends brought together at 6 in abutting relation and secured by means of a strip 1 welded across the butt joint. The rigidity of the end member is secured by means of radial strips comprising a Y member 8 and a single strip 9 extending from the center of the figure to the extremity of the petals of the clover leaf. The Y strip and the single strip are secured at the center as by welding or other appropriate means and a central orifice l0 punched to accommodate the integrating rod H. The radial members 8 and 9 are strengthened by embossing as shown at I2. A carrying handle I3 is secured in brackets I4 which are in turn secured to the radial members. The positioning of the handle is such that in swinging to its position of rest on the rib 4 the flange 5 must be forced. This provides for a locked position of the handle when not in natural use and a ready em? ployment of the same by forcing the flange When it is desired to carry the articles. The ends of the radial members are bent as at l5 and IE to fit the tops of the ribs 4 and the sides of the rim 3 and secured as by welding.
In the modification shown in Figure 4 the radial members are extended past the center to contact and secure the innermost extremity of the periphery as at IT. This view shows the end member remote from that which carries the handle. The extension of these ribs provides further stiffening of the clover leaf figure and, indeed, furnishes a rigidity entirely comparable with a solid faced end member.
I claim:
1. An end member for securing a group of similar individual containers, said member comprising a strip bent to form the desired configuration with respect to the containers to be secured, said strip being formed with a flange adapted to embrace a portion of each container and formed with an internal rib intermediate its depth, and radially arranged arms secured together at substantially the center of said member with their outer ends secured to the upper side of said rib.
2. An end member for securing a group of similar individual containers, said member comprising a strip joined together at its ends and formed with a flange adapted to embrace a portion of each container, an internal rib intermediate the depth of the strip, said strip having adjacent the rib an inturned bead, a bracing member within the strip member comprising a plurality of radially extending arms joined at a point substantially central of said stri member with their outer ends secured to the upper side of said rib,
adapted to engage a. portion of each container, an internal rib adjacent said flange, and a, plurality of strips secured together centrally of said strip member with their outer end extending to the remotest parts of the periphery of said strip member with their ends secured to the upper side of said rib.
