This invention relates to a spool or reel of a a type formed of sheet stock; and hasy for one of its objects the provision of a spool or reel which.
' 10 a spool thev head and barrel of which may be assembled in a firm and rigid manner by welding whereby the parts become more or less homogeneous and a strong construction is provided. Another object of the invention is the provision of an arrangement whereby the joint between the head and body may be covered with a single plate which will assist in strengthening the joint while the! plate at'the same time assists the head in resisting strains due to expansion of wire such'as copper which has a different coefiicient of expansion than the steel of the spool, that the reel or spool may maintain its desired shape. With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will bemore fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

It is foundin the use of spools upon"which wire is wound`\for drawing vand annealing that where a joint exists at the corner between the plane of the head and the barrel that the wire sometimes jams in the crevice of the joint. Also,

With reference to the drawings, I0 designates the barrel portion of the spool or reel and I i one of the heads. The barrel is of tubular construcis not necessarily essential, with the ends of the barrel flanged as at I2 to extend out a substantial distance. The head Ii having a rolled periphery I4 for strength is provided with an opening I3of a` diameter to closely t the flange I2.
A plate I5 of a size just smaller than the diameter of the rolled-in edge I4 contacts 'the outer surface of the plate and extends across the joint I-I formed at the end of the flange I2 and the edge of the opening I3. This plate also has a;
ilange I'I.. A central t11be` I8 extends through the barrel and is provided with abutments I9 which engage theend 20 of the flange I'I while the end of this tube isl flared outwardly as at 2i to assist in locking the strengthening plate I5 against the head bytying opposite end plates together.
Aweld is performed at the joint I6 which secures the abutted surfaces of the flange I2 and the edge of the opening I3 together and also se- I2 at this location. This weld may be performed in any well-known manner either as a line around the entire length of the seam or by spots and plate I5 may be additionally joined at other spots as at 24 that there may be a firm secured l'In Fig. 4 the plate which we have provided instead of beingin substantially a single plane with an in-turned flange at' the center is now designated 25 vand is drawn to `extend inwardly as Aat then b'ent to extend radially inw rdly as at 21, then axially outwardlyy as at 2li/then radially inwardly as at 29 and then axi/a'lly'inwardly as at 30,-to provide an abutment for the projections I9 on the centralv tube I8A of the spool. This arrangement enables the joint at the edges oi.' th flange I2 and opening I3 to be welded togethe and secured tothe plate in the same manner av heretofore .providedwhile giving even'rmer supl port to the barrel I0 and also to the central tu'bu inthe manner previously described.
We have referred above to the parts-"being secured by welding, but we desire it to be .understood that we include by this term brazing or soldering or any equivalent means for uniting theparts so thatthey will not move one relative to the other.
The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but we desire it to be understood that we reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined andlimited only by the terms of the appended claims.
We claim:
l. In a reel or spool of sheet material, a tubular barrel member having a radially .out-turned-v an'ge adjacent its end, a head member comprising a plate having an opening therein receiving said flange with the flange and plate in the same inga plate having an opening therein receiving said flange with the flange and platein the same plane and the rim of the flange meeting the edge of the opening, and an additional plate on the outer surface of said head member extending across the junctures of the flange and plate portion of said members, and means for securing asias?? said parts in such relative position comprising welds at spaced points valong the juncture foratplate. l 3. In a reel or spool of sheet material, a tubular barrel member having a radially out-turned flange adJacent its end, a head member comprising a plate having an opening therein receiving said flange with the flange and plate in the same plane and the rim of the flange meeting the edge of the opening, and an. additional plate on the outer surface of said head member` extending/ across the end of said tubular. barrel member and the juncture of the nange and plate portion of said members, and means for securing saidparts in such relative position comprising welds at spaced points along the juncture-and at positions radially outward from therjuncture. 4. In a reel or spool of sheet material, a tubular barrel member having its stock deflected to provide a radially out-turned flange adjacent its end, a head member comprising a plate of a thickness substantially that of said barrel and having an opening therein heceiving said flange with the rim of said flange meeting the edge of the opening in said plate in abutting relation with each other along said juncture, an additional plate on the outer surface of saidI head member extending across the juncture of the flange and plate portion of s aid members, and means for securing said parts in such relative position, said additional plate having a cntral opening providing a bearing.
