SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,243, dated April 19, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PETER C. FLICK, of Oarrolltown, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleigh-Brakes; .and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appetains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this spe-citication. Figure l is a perspective view; and Fig. 2

is a longitudinal sectional view.

Corresponding parts in both figures are denoted by like letters of reference.

This invention relates to sleigh-brakes and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the runners of the sleigh, which are provided with uprights B B, supporting the crossbars C (l, upon which the box or body (not shown in the drawings) is mounted.

D is the pole or tongue, which is mounted so as to slide through a loop, e, that is secured upon the brace-bar F, which connects the forward ends of the runners.

The said tongue, which may be made in a single piece or jointed, as shown in the drawings, carries at its rear end a cross-har, Gr, providedat its outer ends with rearward-projecting arms or lugs H H, to which are pivoted levers I I.

The rear cross-bar, C, is provided with forward-projecting lugs or arms I', having bearings for a transverse shaft, J, provided with cranks or arms K, to the forward ends of which are pivoted rods L, extending downward through hails or brackets M, upon the inner sides of the runners, and having their lower ends pointed or sharpened, as shown at N. Upon the ends of the shaft J are fixed arms or levers O, pivoted to the ends of the levers I, thus forming toggle-joints, as shown.

When draft is attached in the usual manner to the tongue of the sleigh the toggle-joints turn the crank-shaft J, thus raising the brakerods L to such a height that they will not impede the progress of the sleigh. When it is desired to stop the sleigh, or in going down hill, the tongue is pushed back in its hearings, thus forcing the brake-rods in a downward direction into the ground, and impeding or arresting the progress of the sleigh.

The brake-rods may be retained in a raised position, and the sleigh thus permitted to back by adjusting a pin, P, in a vertical perforation, Q, in the tongue, in front of the brace or cross bar F, as shown. Draft is communicated from the double-tree R by means of a rope or chain, S, having a hook, T, to a chain, U, connected to the runners and engaged by the said hook.

From theioregoingdescription, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation of my invention will be readily understood. By properly jointing the tongue the braking mechanism may he equally Well attached to single and double or bob sleighs.

The construction is simple and inexpensive,`

and the mechanism is automa-tic in its operation.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination, in a sleigh, of the pole passing through a loop upon one of the crossbars that connect the forward end of the runners with the vibratory shaft J, having arms K, the bars L, pivoted to said arms, and the bars O, mounted upon said shaft, and thelevers I, connecting the bars or arms O with a cross-bar at the rear end of the tongue, substantially as described.

2. The tongue or pole of a sleigh arranged to slide longitudinally, and connected, by means of a vibratoryshaft and a system of pivoted arms `or levers, with the brake-bars L, in combination with the chain or rope S, connected with the double-tree, the rope or chain U, connected with the sleigh-runners, and the hook T, connecting the said two ropes or chains, substantially as shown and described.
