Description

B, Works.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH SLATER, OF SANDY LAKE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLED'BRAKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,621, dated June 3, 1873 application filed April 19, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH SLATER, of Sandy Lake, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful' Improvement in Sled-Brakes, of.`
which the following is a specification:
Figure l Iis a vertical longitudinal section of a sled, to which'my improved brake has been attached. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
`Similar letters of reference indicate correst pondin g parts.
My invention is an improvement in the class of sled-brakes, wherein a pivoted bar is caused to take into the snow or ice by means df a hand-lever. The improvement relates to arranging a sliding-rod, provided with a hook.
l of which uthere is nothing new. To the raves of the sled A, about midway between the points of the runners and the forward beam, are attached bearings, in which a rod or roller, To the middle part of the roller B is rigidly attached a short downwardly-pro- `jecting arm, O, to the lower end of which is pivoted the forward end of a bar, D, which passes back beneath the beams of the sled `A. `The barv D passes through a loop or keeper, E, attached to the forward beam of the sled, and to its rear end is attached or upon it :is formed a hook, F, which takes hold of the ground, snow, or ice to check or stop the sled. To one end of the roller B is rigidlyattached an upwardlyprojecting arm, G, for
operating the brake. By this construction, by Y moving the upper end of the arm G forward, the arm G will raise the forward end of the bar D, which forces the hook F down into the ground, from which it cannot rise without raising the wholeweight of the sled, so that the heavier load there may be upon the sled the firmer the hook F will be forced into the ground, snow, or ice.
In case the brake is applied t-o the rear bob, a rod may be attached to the upper end of the arm G, and extended forward to the front bob, so that the driver can readily apply the brake. By moving the upper end' of the arm G to the rearward the forward end of the bar D will be forced downward, raising the hook FaWa-y from the ground, snow, or ice, bringing the bar D up against the under side of the beams of the sled, where it is supported by the keeper E.
Having thus described my invention, I l
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of sliding-rod Dprovided with claw F, and pivoted to arm C of rockshaft B, the lever G, and keeper E, all constructed and arranged as'specitied.
JOSEPH SLATER.
