1 Claim. 1
It is the object of the invention to provide a novel article of furniture comprising inflated seat cushions and concealed, readily accessible means for inflating said cushions.

Fig. 1 shows in elevation, an article of furniture embodying a device constructed in accordance with the invention, parts being in section;

Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing a modification in the cushion.
The device forming the subject matter of this invention may be used in connection with furniture, of any desired sort, seats in public places or conveyances, or the like. Simply for the purposes of illustration, the drawing depicts a sofa.
The article of furniture shown in the drawing comprises a rectangular bottom frame or seatcushion support I, carrying a bottom 2, the legs appearing at 3, the arms at 4, and the back at 5, the back having openings 6 covered by a flexible sheet I, of textile material if desired, and secured by snap fasteners or the like to the back.
The numeral 8 designates a flexible and waterproof cushion enclosed within a covering 9, preferabl of textile material, and selected with due regard to the appearance of the structure. The cushion 8 has an air' inflation tube H], which may be located as desired. Preferably, the tube or inflation means I is disposed at the back of the cushion 8, and opposite to the lowermost of the openings 6 in the back 5.
On the cushion 8 is superposed a pad or spacer, which may be made up as preferred. The pad may comprise a lower layer of moss, hair, or other furniture filling, designated by the numeral II, and a superposed layer of felt, cotton, or the like, marked by the numeral l2. The pad includes a covering I4, generally of textile material and selected with regard to appearances or utility. The covering I4 encloses the layers I l and I2.
On the pad is superposed a flexible upper cushion I5 surrounded by a covering 16, corresponding to the covering 9. The upper cushion l5 has an air inflation means II, which, may be disposed at the back of the cushion, in convenient relation with respect to the lowermost opening 6 in the back 5. The cushion [5 may be made of any desired number of parts, as shown in Fig. 1, and each of these parts has its individua1 inflating means.
Against the back 5 and against the uppermost seat cushion may be disposed a back cushion l8 having a covering l9. On any convenient portion, the back cushion I8 carries an inflating means 20. The air inflating means 20 preferably is disposed on the lower part of the cushion 18, in closely adjacent relation to the lowermost opening 6 in the back 5.
In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, each of the cushions 8, l2 and I8 is a one piece structure, but, as depicted in Fig. 3, the cushion, designated generally by thev numeral It, may be made up of sections 22, constructed as desired and secured together in such a way as to provide an air tight structure.
In this application, the word cushion is to be construed as meaning and including a mattress,
pillow or any other device, upon which a person may desire to sit, or against which a person may desire to lean.
When it is desired to re-inflate the cushions 8, l5 and I8, this may be done by raising the back sheet 1, exposing all of the air admission means l0ll20, by way of the openings 6.
The lowermost opening 6 is located closely adjacent to the support I. The substantiall vertical inflation means 20 for the back-cushion I8 is located in front of the lowermost opening 6 and is extended downwardly below the upper edge of that opening. The substantially horizontal inflation devices to and II, for the seat cushions, are spaced from-the inflation means 20, to make all of the inflation instrumentalities accessible through the lowermost opening 6. As has been stated hereinbefore, the back sheet or closure 1 may be raised, and is therefore movable to expose the several inflation instrumentalities at the will of an operator, the back sheet concealing the inflation instrumentalities when the back sheet is in the condition shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
An article of furniture comprising a bottom, and a back having an opening, an upper, inflatable seat cushion, a lower, inflatable seat cushion and a spacer between the cushions, the
