REMOVABLE PORTABILITY FEATURES FOR ARMY FIELD SAFES Filed Feb. 1, 1944 Patented June 4, 1946 REMOVABLE PORTABILITY FEATURES FOR ARMY FIELD SAFES Stanley It. Akers, Detroit, Mich. Application February 1, 1944, Serial No. 520,709
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to conservation of valuables from ready safe portability by clearing from such safe the portability features at destination arrival for the safe.
This invention has utility for picking up, by detachable means, military field safes, as for pole carriage over difficult terrain. Removable keypiece handles or eyes, hereunder are readily anchored with the safe wall for hand or :bar engagement in lifting and carrying the protective receptacle.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a front view of an army safe, with detachable key-piece handles or eyes located sufiiciently near the top of the safe to permit pole-carrying of the safe;
Fig. 2 is a detail view, on an enlarged scale of the T-head or key handle in the countersunk or flush pocket mounting with the safe of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line III-III. Fig. 2, showing the seating of the handle key in the countersunk pocket;
Fig. 4 is a front view of a patch pocket or exterior seating connection for the key-handle;
Fig. 5 is a section on they line V-V, Fig. 4, showing the key-handle therein as up for lifting operation;
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 3, wherein the key-handle is co-planar, instead of ofiset as in Fig. 3; and
Fig. 'l is a View similar to Fig. 2, with a doubleeye or connected ring type of key, one loop serving as the key and the other as the handle or lifting bar receiver.
A strong box or safe I may be metal sheathed. For fire-proofing, there may be an insulation filler, while for attack resistance such filler may be reinforced concrete. Adjacent top 2 of the safe I, there is provided in a safe side 3 a slot or keyway 4 to a pocket 5 integral with the safe I. Under this disclosure, the safe I, as it stands normally, lacks ready features for lifting or carrying. A key-handle is provided with a grasp portion 6, from which there is a depending angular or oifset portion 1 to a head or cross bar portion 8. This special form terminal portion or key 8 may, at angular shifting of the grip or hand portion 6, be inserted in the slot 4 to enter the pocket 5. Upon lifting-grasp of the handle 6, the offset 1 lodges against pocket top portion or seat 9 as the key bar 8 rides to upper holding position in the pocket 5. The grasp portion now approximates upright direction and with the pocket 5 adjacent thetop. there is clearway for freely grasping the handle portion 6 or thrusting a carrying bar l0 thru the handles 6 as upon opposite sides 3 of the safe I.
In lieu of the countersunk or flush pocket 5, adaptation to transporting, whether adjacent the top or downward therefrom, may be effected'by weld attachment of a patch pocket ll, thereby made integral with the safe I and having a slot l2 to a pocket recess I3 having an upper seat or ledge M for engaging the angular offset 1 in locating the grasp portion 6 sufficiently away from the safe side 3 not to pinch the fingers or hand of the one seeking by this key device to lift and carry the safe.
With a slot I5 to a pocket 16 (Fig. 6) adjacent the safe top 2 for a grasp portion H to rise thereabove, a depending or stem portion I8 may be coplanar with the handle l! as well as with the key cross bar portion l9. Upon lifting, the portion l8 rides against a seat 20.
For a less shallow pocket or chamber, a slot 2| (Fig. '1) may permit turning of a ring or eye portion 22, as a stem 23 therefrom connects carrier or handle ring 24.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure Letters Patent is:
For a safe for housing valuables. said safe having, near the top of a pair of upstanding opposite walls, a downwardly directed outwardly open slot forming a throat to a pocket with a transverse seat determining a top limit for the pocket as to the slot, and an attachable integral member having a crosswise extending terminal portion tumable edgewise for thrusting thru the slot to be there additionally turned for the crosswise terminal portion to lodge in the seat, the member having an intermediate portion to ride thru the throat at the top of the slot in outward and upward extent, a loop terminal portion'on the intermediate effective to transmit safe-transporting load strains to said seat in the pocket thru the member crosswise terminal portion riding in the top of the pocket, said member, a relieved of safe-lifting load, being freely swingable outward from its wall with sufiicient lowering for quarter turn and then outdraft clearance in withdrawing the crosswise portion clear of the pocket and slot.
