Description

No. 240,103. Patented Apri IIIIIII I.
TTTTTT S.
UNITE rares JAMES M. DENNIS, OF CAMBRIDGE CITY, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND CALEB P. RINKER.
BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,103, dated April 12, 1881.
Application filed February 18, 1881.
(Model.)
To all 'whom fit may concern Beit known that I, JAMES M. DENNIS, of Cambridge City, in the county ot Vayne and State of' Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Varnish-Brush, of which the following -is a full, clear, and exact description.
Figure l is a perspective view of' my wooden varnish or pain-t brush, and 2 is a sectional view of the same.
1o Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Theinventiou consistsin the process of separating and preparing woody fiber for varnish or paint brushes, as hereinafter described.
In carrying my invention into effect l add to about eight ounces of water two ounces ot concentrated alkali and then soak the pieces of wood or bark'of suitable size in the boiling solution for about ten minutes, and then I subzo ject the wood or bark to a crushing, pressing, orpouuding process, which separates the fibers from each other and from the nou-tibrous pou tion. and then I wash the wood or fibers in clean water, then dry the saine. I then boil the pieces of wood in water having a quantity of glue added, for about one-half hour, and tinally oil the fibers with olive or other oil to render them elastic.
In making the character ot' brush shown iu 3o the drawings, in which the filamentous portion a, the body I), and the handle c are all formed Yot' a single piece of' wood, the piece of wood out of' which the brush is to be formed is given the proper shape and outline by turning, shaving, or otherwise, and only the portion a is subjected to the treatment above described, and then the Wrapper c is secured to the body b, to prevent breaking and further separating of' the fibers by the nails or screws d.
Instead ot' forming the handle e of' the brush 4o before the treatment for separating the fibers, it is obvious this may be done at'ter such treatment, it" desired; and instead of forming the entire bruslr of a single piece otwood or inner bark, the fibers may be obtained separately by treating, as above described, pieces ot' the Wood or bark ot' suitable size to make the requisite length otl fibers, and subsequently securing the fibers to the handle or body of the brush, by gluing or otherwise, in which case the han- 5o dle and body may be of any wood or material.
Haring thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The process herein described for preparing the fibers of' wood in or for t-he manufacture of brushes, which consists in first soaking the wood in heated alkaline water, then separating the fibers by pressing and pounding, or otherwise` then cleaning the fibers, then boil- 6o ing the same in agglutina ted water, and finally oiliug the fibers, substantially as and for the purposes described.
JAMES MONROE DENNIS.
