HENRY FELLOWS, OF BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-CHIMNEV CLEANERS.
VSpecification forming part of Letters Patent No. 4127,230, dated May 28, 1872.
To all whom it may concern: r
Be it known that I, HENRY FELLows, of Bloomington, in the county of Monroe and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Lamp-Chimney Oleaners; and I do herebyT declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and loperation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the dra-wing is a representation ot' a longitudinal central section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side View of the same.
This invention has relation to a lamp-chimney cleaner made from a rounded piece of wood, split so as to produce two elastic jaws, between which is held a piece of cloth or paper, with which to clean the interior of a lampchimney. My invention relates to means for cleaning lamp-chimneys; and consists in constructing a slotted and toothed rag or paper holder having a spherical head, substantially as hereinafter desclibed and claimed.
In the drawing, A represents the handle referred to, made by shaping a pieceof wood to the form of an ordinary drum stick, and splitting it lengthwise a suiiicient distance from the'head toward the buttend to produce two corresponding elastic arms, a a'. b b represent notches cut in the edges of said arms, so that the iin gers may be conveniently used in spreading the arms a a apart. C represents the spherical or equivalentlyformed head, divided into two sections by splitting the handle. The inner surfaces of said sections are each provided with one or more teeth, d, the points of which t into corresponding recesses. The paper or cloth is placed between said sections, and is made secure by means of said teeth. The material is placedbetween said sections; and then, by holding it in the left hand while the handle is turned with the right, the head is covered. An India-rubber band, e, secured to the handle, is then slipped onto the paper or cloth, and holds it in position, as shown in the drawing. The head prevents said band from being pulled ofi'.
I am aware that the use of a cleft stick with a ring around it is not new. Therefore I do not claim such broadly; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved lamp-chimney cleaner, consistin g of the cleft stick or handleAprovided with the ball-shaped head, each half of which is furnished on its flat inner side with teeth d, and of the rubber band e, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY FELLQWS.
