A. BERNEY. Shovel or Scoop.
No. 240,079. Patented Aprill2, l88l.
flWITNESSES; 5 INVENTORJ MM g UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED BERNEY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE GLOBE COMPANY, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
SHOVEL OR SCOOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,079, dated April 12, 1881.
Application filed March 14, 12581.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED BERNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shovels; and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap- 1o pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon. which form apart of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in shovels or scoops; and the object is to furnish a closed shovel (except atone end) to take up any material, and by means of the plungerhead compact said materials into a solid form, wedge shape, at the same time have the means of pushing the solid mass outtof the shovel or scoop by the same means that condensed the mass.
The invention consists in the construction of the parts as hereinafter described. The chamber is made wedge shape. Aiiy power screw, cam, or plain force can be applied in the handle. The plunger-rod can be worked on the side of the long handle, so as to leave the holding-handle firm in the hand. It can 0 be made of wood or metal, and will be more fully described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the shovel chamber or receiver, wedge shape, with plunger-head, rod, and handle, the plungerhead and rod being drawn back. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of same, showing the'plungerhead pushed forward'with rod-handle F on the side and slot H in handle D, in which to work the rod E. Fig.- 3 is a view of the shovel, the wedge-shaped receiver and chamber being inclosed, showing air-inlet I.
In the drawings, A represents the wedgeshaped receiver, made so as to more easily receive the materials with which it is to be filled, and is connected to the square chamherB, in
(N0 model.)
which is the plunger or compressor 0, connected to rod E, which slides through the handle D. The compressing-handle F may be at the side, as shown atH, or entirely through the lifting-handle. Cam or screw power can be used,
if desired; but for ordinary purposes simple pressure will compact most articles. I shows an outlet and inlet for air to escape and enter. This hole can be made on the rear.
In using the compressing-shovel, shove it into the materials so as to till the whole cavity, withdraw it, then press down the shovel, or against atlat surface, so as to hold the contents in it. Then force the rod and plungerhead in the chamber down as far as possible. Then place the shovel where desired, push on the compressing-handle, and the contents will be discharged (if of such a nature as to impact together) in a solid form. 6
This article will be found very useful for many purposes, especially for impacting anthracite-coal waste, when combined with other substances that will cause them to adhere together, and where it is desired to place it in forms in af'urnace to be consumed in lumps, or to dry and solidify by the action of the compressor and adhering materials with which it is combined. These shovels can be used to take up quantities of articles by forcing them into barrels or other receptacles, holding it within the vessel by means of a vacuum caused by the plunger being drawn back after the shovel is filled.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a shove], the wedge-shape chamber B, plunger-head C, handle I), and rod E, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ALFRED BERNEY.
