Patente-d April` 12, 1881 nhmtur- A'r'rozr-KNEY.
N,FETERS, PHOTO-LITHDGRAPHER. WASHINGTON, Fl4 CA UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
WILLIAM A. WRIGHT, OF CENTRETON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO ISAAC R. KULP, OF HATFIELD, PENNSYLVANIA.
BALING-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,068, dated April 12, 1881.
Application filed September 24, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom @t may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. WRTGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Centreton, in the county ot' Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Baling-Presses, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accoinpaying drawing, in which the figureis a side elevation, partlysec- 1o tional, ot' a press embodying my invention,
which consists of means for closing the openings at the sides of the press-box through which the levers ofthe follower are caused .to move; and, further, of means forquickly, con veniently, and powerfully operating the follower.
Referring to the drawing, A represents the press-box; B, the central partition, which is employed when two baling-spaces are required,
..20 and C O the followers.
D represents levers, each of which is pivoted at its upper end to the followerO and at its lower end to a rack-bar, E, the teeth of the two bars facin gin opposite directions and meshing with a pinion, a, mounted on suitable bearings and located intermediate of the bars.
On the shaft to which is secured the pinion a are pivoted two links, F F', theupper ends 3o of which are respectively pivoted to the levers D.
In the lower portions of opposite sides of the press-box are openings in which the levers D enter and play during the rising and falling motions of the followers. rIhese openings are covered by upright guards G, which consist of plates of the width of the openings, and of length sufficient to follow the motions of the levers without uncovering the open- 40 ings, the plates bearing against the outside of thepress-box. The guards or plates are hinged to the outer or upper faces ofthe levers D, or are provided at their lower ends with rollers which rest on said faces, the hinges or rollers being shown at J. In order to retain the guards in position, I provide rollers H, which are mounted on the sides of the box A and bear against the outer faces of the guards.
Power is applied to the pinion or wheel a,
5o whereby the parallel rack-bars E are drawn inwardly. This brings the lower ends of the levers D toward each other and causes the elevation of the followers C. The links IFF/are both pivoted on the shaft of the pinion a, and serve to guide the levers D. By this provision of racks and levers the followers are moved quickly and powerfully and conveniently by the operation of the pinion a.. As the levers I) ascend the guards G are raised, and thus the openings` bare kept closed. When the le- 6o vers descend at the descent of the followers the guards G also descend and again cover the openings b. In either case the levers D are permitted to move or play in the openings bi When the press is being h'lled, and as the fol- 65 lowers begin to ascend, the escape of hay, 85o., through the openings b is prevented, as said'- openings are guarded, as has been stated, the upper ends of the guards being outside of the press-box, so as not to be resisted by the con- 7o tents thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In combination with rack-bars E E, and a horizontal shaft carrying a single pinion, a, that meshes with said rack-bars, a follower or followers, G, a pair of levers, D, pivoted to said rack-bars and operating said follower or followers, and a pair ot links, F F', pivoted 8o respectively to the levers D, and on the shaft carryingthe pinion a, substantially as set forth.v
2. In combination with a press-box and a follower or followers, and a pair of levers working in slots of said box, a shield or shields Working through the sides of said box, for the purpose of covering said slots without limiting the upward motion of said follower or followers. f
3. In combination with followers C, slotted 9 press-box A, and levers D D, the shields G Gr, and guide-rolls H, substantially as set forth.
4. A slotted press-box, follower, and lifting mechanism, in combination with a shield for the slot of said box, said shield working through the side of the same, so as to interpose no obstacle to the pressing-action of said follower, as set forth.
