BALING PRBSS.
N0. 570,027. Patentod 00t. 27,896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ARTHUR LE BOY KOHLER, OF GENEVA, NEYV YORK.
BALlNG-PRESS.
SPECIFIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent N0. 570,027, dated October 27, 1896. Application filecl J'u1y 31 1896. Serial N0. 601244. (N0 model.)
T0 all w7wm z't may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR LE ROY KOH- LER, a eitizen of the United Stabes, residing a'o Geneva, in ehe eounty 0f Ontario and State of New York, have invented eertain new ancl useful Improvements in BalingPresses, of which the following is a speeification.
My present invention pertains 150 bedingpresses, the objeets, advantages, ancl eonsoruetion 0f whieh Will be hereinafuer sei; foroh, refe1enee being hacl 130 13l1e aecompanying clrawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of press; Fig. 2, a similar view looking at the opposite sicle of preSs ancl showing the power meehanism a-nd he connections between it and the press, and Figs. 3 and 4 top plan views illustrative of the clifferent positions of Ehe loekin g device for the swinging i001 ancl the power-relieving mechanism.
The press illustratecl, anal 130 which I have shown my invenuion applied, is what is 00m- 1nonly known as a verl;ieal press, the hay 01' other substanee 130 be balecl being fecl into ehe top ancl the plunger working from the bottom upwardly Under the constrnction of this type of press, 110W generally in use, the hay When loaded i11130 tl1e press must fron1 time t0 filme be eompressecl 01 paekecl down in 01- der 130 seeure ehe requisite amount neeessary 110 procluce a full bale. This is usually aecomplished by breading upon the eharge, and after it is foreecl dnwn adding more. This methocl is neeessarily slow, and unsatisfaetory in many ouher ways. One objeet of my in- Vention is t0 clo away with this meoh0d 0f eompleuing the charge.
A still fu1ther objeet of. 1ny invention is 130 prwide such conneetions between Ehe power mechanisin and I1he press tha the seid power meehanism may be employed t0 elose a movable side 01 member 0f the press and'thus seeure alle initial eompressionhereofore manually obtainecl; also, to have l1e power actuate the bale-eompressing meehanism as a coutinuing operation 0f the foregoing initial compression, and thus (lo away With any stoppage 0f the power zmd the consequent delay and losS.
Referring to the clrawings, A A clesignate the sills, B B the uprights steppecl therein,
ancl O O the upper cross-bars, these parts being stayed and eonneetecl 130 insnre the requisite strength, and forrning the frame of the press, within whieh is seeured 01 formecl the baling-ehamber. This ehamber is f0nned by fixed side D, hingecl side E, and fixed sides F F, the laer being eontinued outwardly from tl1e fmme ancl forming wings er extensions F F. A door G is formed above uhe side D, Mild a cover H is also provided, designed '00 be held in plaee by ways 01 guides secured 130 tl1e uprights. The side E is hinged ab its bottom t0 a eross-bar seeured between the uprights A A a1: the bottom 0f the pressehamber. Vhen nhe press is 0pen and in the position t0 be ehargecl, the side oe'eupie's the position indieated in Figs. 1 and 3 that is, its upper end is swung outwardly and 00cmpies a position a1; Lhe extreme; outer edges 0f the Wings 01 extensions F F. VVhen elosed, the side ocenpies the position indicated in Figs. 2 and 4, in Whi0h' posibion in is held by means of latehes I 01 Ehe like. The side 0001ipies the inelined 01 open position when Ehe press-ehamber is 110 be charged, and when in such position the area of the ehamber is inereasecl t0 such an extent that n0 beating down 01 eompression of the material being worked upon is neeessary L0 obt-ain the requisie arn0unt t-o make a full eharge'. When the chamber has been cornpletely filled wih the 100se material, the eover is plaeed 0ver agains the side E, and when seid sicle is clmwn init forees the eover o0 its proper position f0r pressing.
I will now deseribe the means by whieh the sicle is elosed and ehe power transferred direetly from the sicle-elosing meehanlsm co the power mechanism for working Ehe plunger ancl effecting the final compression.
T0 the upper end ofthe side E is fixed a eross-beam J, ancl to eaeh end of this'is pivoted a link 01 bail K. T0 the other end 0f this link is pivotecl a seeond link L, the side arme 01 bars of whieh are just far enough apart so permit ib 130 be folded over the other link when in the position indioatecl in Figs. 1 ancl 3. \Vhen in this position, the elosed encl of link L Will be in the nearest possible position so the eross-bar J. A pulley M is seeured so each of U16 links L, zu1cl closes to bear against the frame and force the links outwardly; catches f01 holding he piv oted side when brought ino its closed position; a p1unger; a power mechanism; counections between 13116 links and the powe1 mechanism; and connections between the plunger and alle power mechanism, substantia11y as seo forth.
7. In a pi*ess the combination of.the pivoted side designed 130 give an initia1 compression t0 the material being worked upon; a plunger f01 obtaining tl1e final compression a windlass; connecbions between the pivoted side and fl1e windlass; counections beoween the plunger und the windlass and means carried by the windlass f01 disengaging the connec- 'OIODS between the side and the windlass 2u1(1 bringing the plunger into action.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my band in the presence of two winnesses.
ARTHUR LE ROY KOHLER. \Vitnesses ADELINE F. GAYLORD, CHAS. S. BURRALL.
