M ETALLURGIC AND OTHER FURNACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,037, dated April 12, 1881.

To all'whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, CHARLES Pnnno'r, a citizen of the Republic of France, and a resident of Rive de Gier, France, have invented certain Improvements in Metallurgic and other Furnaces, (for which I have obtained French Letters Patent March, 1880,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of puddling and other metallurgic furnaces, glassovens, and furnaces generally which are subjected to very great heat, and hence liable to rapid deterioration; and the object of my invention is so to construct the furnace that its principal parts may be capable of being removed and replaced, so that the furnace can be readily repaired, even when the furnace is in operation.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated-my invention as applied to one of the well-known Pernot rotary puddling-furnaces, Figure 1, Sheet 1, being a longitudinal vertical section Fig. 2, Sheet 2, a plan view Fig. 3, Sheet 3, a transverse section; and Fig.
4, an illustration showing the method of sus-- pending the cover of the rotary hearth.
The rotating hearth or receiver A is mounted in an inclined position on a carriage, B, on
which it can be freely rotated, a series of rollers, D, mounted in hearings in the hearth being adapted to run on a circular plate, 0, on the carriage for that purpose. The carriage B is mounted on wheels running on rails on the floor of the furnace, so that the carriage, with the hearth, can be withdrawnfrom the furnace, as described in my Letters Patent No. 169,033, October 19, 1875.
Rotary movement is imparted to the hearth from a motor, E, Fig. 2, through suitable gear and shafting carrying a pinion gearing into a circular rack on the under side of the rotary hearth.

For this purpose the several parts are provided with hooks K, to which chains L of cranes or other suitable hoisting mechanism may be attached, as indicatedby dotted lines in Figs. 1, 2, and 4, the latter figure representing the cover H detached and suspended by the hoisting-chains. In the same way any of the detachable parts of the furnace may be removed for repairs, and this may. be done without interfering with the continuous oper- 7o ation of the furnace by having on hand another corresponding part, which may be immediately put in the place of the one removed.
Although I have shown the coverH as made in one piece, it may be made in as many parts as may be found desirable.
The conduits F, F, 850., and the fines I, I, 850., may each be made separate.
The principal advantage of this improvement, it will be seen, rests in the quickness with which parts of the furnace may be repaired whereas in the usual construction of furnaces the repairing of any part necessitates the stoppage of work in the furnace for a con siderable length of time. The further advantages are obtained of economy and simplicity in construction; for whereas, in the old form of the Pernot furnace, for instance, the weight of theiron and castings used amounted to thirtyseven thousand kilograms for afurnace capable 0 of melting twenty-five tons, a furnace of the same capacity of the improved construction requires not more than five thousand six hundred kilograms of iron and castings.
The improvements may be applied to other 5 forms of furnaces than that described. For
instance, they may be applied to puddlingand heating furnaces generally, gas-generator furnaces, blast-furnaces, glass-ovens, 850.
