fixed to axles 2l which have bearings in bars 22, and said bars are secured to the bottom of a receptacle 23, which latter provided at its upper endivith an enlarged hopper 24 to maintain the receptacle full of the charge for'thc furnace. On the bottom of receptacle 23, a transversely positioned horizontal rack bar 25 is secured, and with which a pinion 2G meshels. This pinion 26 is xed to a .longitudinally extending shaft 27 provided at one end with a beveled gear 23. This gear 2S .meshes with facing beveled gears 29 and 30 loose on shaft l2, and adapted to be locked to said shaft by a clutch 31, which is-keyed to the shaft and located between the gears 29 and 30. This clutch is vadapted to lock either of the gears 29 and 30 to the shaft 13, so as to drive shaft 27 in either direction, and is also adapted to assume an idle position between them. A lever 32 is provided for moving the clutch` so that the operator may, by means of t-he clutch, move the receptacle toward and away from the furnace as will be readily understood.
Two parallel vertical series of discharge tubes 33 extend through the inner vertical wall of receptacle 23;' are flared outward at their inner ends as tshown at 34, and are supported in rings 35 fixed to the receptacle 23 around the openings through which said tubes project. These tubes are also supported by coupled rings 36 which are connected to sectional rods 37 secured to the hopper 24, and have turn buckles 38 so as to adjust the length of said rods and determine the adjustment of said supporting rings. On the free ends of these tubes 33. slightly conical and movable nozzles39 are provided, and are adapted to be projected through the twyer openings 40 in the retorts 2. As the retorts are commonly provided with two twyer Openings, my apparatus is provided with two tubes for each retort, and these tubes are arranged in v ertical seriesas above explained, so that they may simultaneously feed into all of the retorts of a vertical tier.- i'
In each of the tubes 33, tworm conveyers 41 are located, and eXtendLinto the receptacle 23, so'that the vcharge is fed outwardly through the tubesSO by'means of the rotary movement of then-worm conveyers. The shafts 42 of these worm conveyers extend through the outer wall .of receptacle 23,'and they are all provided with sprocket wheels 43 which are loose on the shafts 42. The 'hub of one of these` sprocket wheels 43 has fxedthereto ay second Sprocket wheel 44 l*which* is connected by' a chain 545 with a sprocket Wheel 46 on a motor shaft 12. Clutches 47 keyed to the shafts 42 are provided, and are adapted to lock the sprocket'wheels tothe shafts. Levers 48 fulcrumed at their inner-ends on L y `\\i\ posts 49, engage said clutches and are adapt- -ed to` move them so that while all of the shafts are normally operated at the `salme time. a condition may' arise where it is desirable tol stop one or more of the worm convevers. and these clutchesor levers permit this to be done. il," The .sprocket wheels 43 are alll driven-spy. a single sprocket chain 50, which is heldfi in close contact with the sprocketwheels 43 by means of idle sprocket wheels 51. These idlers' 51. are mounted on blocks52 which slide in channel bars 53, and are adjustable therein by means of set screws 54, so that the said idle sprockets maybe adjusted to take up all slack in the chai-n, and insure a perfect engagement of the chain with liVhile I have shown what I believe to a preferred arrangement of power transmitting mechanism, together with clutches and other meansfor controllingrthe transmis sions of the power, I would havecit under-V `stood that I do'not limit myself to the `Vpre- 100 vcise detailsset forth, but consider myselfat liberty to make such changes and altera-- y.sprocket wheels 43, and therefore insure a i furnace.
