Description

LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,967, dated `May 10, 1859.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS K. WEs'rER, of Lawrence, in the county of Essex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Lock for Doors, Chests, Trunks, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, on which- Figure l represents the interior view of a lock with all its parts, when unlocked. Fig. 2 represents the same when locked. Fig. 3 represents underside of cover to lock. Fig. 4L represents interior view of bolt. Fig. 5 represents lock case. Figs. 6, 7 and 8 represent the different views of the guard used to protect the lock from pickers see E. Fig. 9 represents one of the levers with spring. Fig. 10 represents side view of key.
The bolt see Fig. 4, is made hollow to receive the levers and springs as see B, Figs. l and 2, H being an elevated cylinder made to enter the tube of the key, and, K, an elevated circular arc around the key hole works in the groove, K, of the key.
L, is a circular arc attached to the cover see Fig. 3, and passes in the groove L of the key.
E, is a guard or :tender and is relied on to protect the levers, the ends of the levers, c, being directly behind it, leaving no direct view of the levers from the key hole either when locked or unlocked. Now when the key is put into the key hole the groove, K, of the key passes around the elevated are of the lock, K, and the groove, L, of the key passes around the circular arc, L, of the lock and the guard or fender E when the face of the key touches a series of levers with springs, C, of length and thickness to correspond to the face of the key and are moved from the shoulder piece D, and the bolt is thus made to slide either in locking or unlocking.
The advantage of my lock over others is that it will be hard to pick, there being no direct communication from the key hole to the levers the view being cut off by the guard or fender E.
' I claim- The guard or tender E as described in the specication and for the purpose therein described.
THOS. K. WEBSTER. [n s] In presence of- E. D. HAYES, JAMES H. BAKKER.
