Specification of Letters Patent No. 13,539, dated September 11, 1855.

To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that I, O. H. BUTTERFJIELD, of South Lancaster, in the county of lVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lantern-Guards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construct-ion and operation of the same, reference being had to the drawings herewith presented and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

To construct my invention I make two rims A and B fitted to the small part of the lantern above and below the swell of the glass and made with joints as at E E and the ends D, D, made so as to catch when pressed together, these rims receiving the ends of the rods C, C, thus making a movable guard that may be easily removed by releasing the catches and opening it, enabling one to clean the glass from snow or dirt and should the glass get broken this construction of the guard admits of its being more easily replaced than any other plan. This improvement is found to be of much service as it enables the employees on railroads, etc., to use the guards during snow storms and when working through drifts in the night when the guards made in the old way were so much trouble as to cause their being thrown aside altogether.

\Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I claim making the guard movable by means of hinges and catches as above described or any other substantially the same.
