Description

r; sTATEs PATENT oEEIcE.
L. scHRoDER, oEoiNciNNATi, OHIO, AssiGNoR 'ro JOHN H. scHRoDER a co., 0E sAME PLAGE.
LOCK-GUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,523, dated June 21, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE SCHRODER, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lock-Guards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in lock guards intended to be inserted within the locks of doors for the purpose of preventing them from being opened by means of other keys, and at the same time being made adjustable so as to be used in any ordinary lock, as hereinafter set forth.
Figure l, represents in perspective a section of an ordinary door lock with the lock guard adjusted therein and arranged inthe position at which the key of the lock guard may be removed leaving` the guard within the lock. (Fig. 2,) is a longitudinal sectional view of the lock guard, showing the internal arrangement of its parts. (Fig. 3) is a plan of the key which forms a part of the lock guard. (Fig. 4) is an elevation of the tumblers.
(a) is a case formed with a longitudinal slot (a), transverse slots (t, t, t) and projection (Zt).
(cZ) is a hollow stem made to it closely within the case (a), the inserted end being formed hollow, so as to receive t-he tumblers (Z, Z, Z) and spiral springs (o), and also made with a slot, corresponding with the slot (u) of case (a). The other end of the stem is cast solid, with a recess (CZ) in its end, and provided with a projecting lip (e) and adjustable sliding collar is a guide piece, and serves also as a protector for the lip (c).
It is formed with a teat which is inserted in recess (tZ), while the other end being screwed firmly to projection (it) secures the guide in its proper position; and holds the stem (CZ) to its proper place in the case (a).
(Z, Z, Z are tumblers, formed with the necks and arranged within the tubular portion of the stem (CZ) in such manner that the necks will protrude through. the slot of the tubular portion of the stem ((Z) and slot (u) of the case (a).
(Z2) are spiral springs larranged in such manner as to sustain the tumblers (Z, Z, Z) )their proper positions within the stem is a spiral spring arranged around the stem ((Z) in such manner as to press against the collar (c) and hold it against the cap (p) of the lock, when the guard is applied to use.
(f) is a key formed-with shoulders (m, m mf) projection (g) and tapering point (mm). The lock guard is intended to be inserted, in ordinary locks, for the purpose of preventing doors from being opened by means of ordinary keys, skeleton keys, etc., and may be operated as follows, the guard being inserted through the keyhole, into the lock, as represented in Fig. l) The key (f) being inserted within the guard, the point (mm) presses against the tumbler (Z) shoulder (m) against tumbler (Z) and shoulder (m) against tumbler (Z) by means of which the springs (o) will be compressed and the tumblers (Z, Z, Z) moved inwardly, until the shoulder impinges against the case (a), at which time the key will be fully inserted and the necks (a) of the tumblers brought opposite the slots (t), and the projection (g) of the key will have passed within the case (a) and fitted into the slot in the tubular portion of the stem ((Z), the stem (CZ) will then be turned by means of the key until the necks of the tumblers are made to bear in the slot-s (t), by means of which the lip (e) is made l to project behind the cap (p) of the lock,
and thus secure the guard within the lock, while at the same time the'collar (c) is pressed against the outside of the cap of the lock, by means of the spring (b), and thus the guard is held steady in its place. The key may then be removed from the guard, which is allowed to remain in the lock as a barrier against the insertion of other keys or devices for unlocking doors. By turning the key in a direction opposite to that for locking the guard, the lip (c) is returned within the protector (i, and the guard may be withdrawn from the lock with the key.
What I claim as my invention and desire n testimony. of which invention I have to secure by Letters Patent is hereunto set my hand.
The arrangement ofthe several tumblers LAWRENCE SGHRODER in combination With intervening Springs 5 which vary the spaces between said tumblers Witnesses:
and operate the lock in the manner and for H. E. CLIFTON, the purpose substantially as set forth. CHARLES L. FISHER.
