Description
ALFRED BERNEY, OF B UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
OSTON, MASSAOHUETTS, ASSIGNOR TO NATHIEL A.
DUTTON, OF 'SAME PLAGE. i
* PROCESS OF PREPARING ANTHRACITE WASTE, &c., FOR COMBUSTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,642, dated April 5, 1881. Application filed July 21, 1.880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED BERN-EY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Preparation of Anthracite Goal Dust, Waste, or Screenings,
so that it may be more economically consumed; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others to use it.
Heretofore anthracite coal dust, waste, or screenings has been prepared for combustion by means of mixing it with tar, pitch, and divers other materials and compressed into forms at much expense, labor, and trouble, and when burned alone required a strong blast and mixing with bituminous coal, either of which add to the expense of its consumption.
The object of my invention is to prepare the waste coal screenings by the simple process described, so that as it is shoveled into the fire it will coke or adhere into masses, and thus burn as bituminous coal does, by which means a strong draft, that is necessary to aid in itscombustion, can be made without the liability to carry too much of it through the fines and be wasted out of the stack; also down through the grate-bars. The efiect of this process will be to enable others to use waste coal screenings in place of large coal, and save much expense.
To carry my invention into practical effect, I mix with one ton of anthracite coal dust or waste four quarts of pulverized lime, potash, or soda, and eight gallons of pulverized asphalt, rosin, tar, or pitch ofany kind, or liquid tar. To these I add sufficient water to saturate the waste. After it is. prepared it must be placed into a heated furnace, in the corners, along the sides or center, in brickshaped masses, so that the materials will coke together by the action of the heat. (For that purpose I use a coking-shovel made in brickshape form.) The lime and tarry substance released by the heat unites or cokes the waste.
I do not confine myself to the exact proportions herein stated, as they may be varied somewhat aud not depart from the spirit of my invention.
What I desire to claim ters Patent is The process of coking or uniting anthracite waste or screenings, which consists in mixing the same with powdered lime or soda and asphalt or tar and Water, then passing it into a heated furnace, to be solidified with heat and consumed, all substantially as described.
and secure by Let- ALFRED B ERNEY.
