Description

(ModeL) 'W.N. WELLS. Stop-per with Pad for Medicine Bottles.
, Patented March 29, 1881 INVENTOR MM f'w I mm! 7 N. PETERS. PHOYO L THOGRAFHE UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM N. WELLS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
STOPPER W-ITH PAD FOR MEDICINE-BOTTLES.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,581, dated March 29', 1881:
Application filed October 28, 1880. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM N. WELLS, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoppers with Pads for Medicine-Bottles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved cork or stopper with pad for dispensing medicine by drops, or for local application; and it consists of a stopper having a pad of piano-felt or other absorbent material of a predetermined absorbing and delivering capacity attached to the bottom thereof, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l represents a side elevation ofm y invention, and Fig. 2. vertical longitudinal section thereof.
Similar letters of referenceindicatelike parts in both figures.
In the drawings, A represents the stopper,
. which is composed of cork, glass, or other suitable material, provided at the lower or smaller end with a pad, a, of piano-felt or other suitable absorbent substance, as hereinafter designated, said pad being connected to the stopper by means of a non corrosive metallic pin or wire, I), passing up through the body of the coras shown in Fig. 2. The pad a may, howevt r be cemented or otherwise suitably seeu. to the bottom of the cork without departing from the spirit of my invention. To the top of the stopper is connected a shield, 13, of glass, rubber, or other suitable material, said shield being cemented or otherwise secured to the op of the cork or stopper, and is adapted to allow of the stopper being readily handled or withdrawn from the bottle without soiling the fin 'ers.
The construction of my invention being as described, it will be observed that a pad of seven-sixteenths of an inch in diameter for a prescription -vial having a seven --sixteenths orifice will absorb five drops from the contents ofsaid vial and will impart the same upon pressure, while a larger or smaller pad will absorb and impart any given number of drops, according to the diameter of the pad; of seven-sixteenths of an inch diameter will absorb and dispense ten drops; of eight-sixteenths of an inch diameter will absorb and dispense thirteen drops; of nine-sixteenths of an inch diameter will absorb and dispense sixteen drops; of tensixteenths of an inch diameter will absorb and dispense twenty one drops; of eleven sixteenths of an inch diameter will absorb and dispense twenty-five drops; of twelve-sixteenths of an inch diameter will absorb and dispense thirty drops.
The stopper may also be used for local ap plications for relieving pain by pressing the pad, saturated with the required remedy, upon the part affected, which operation may be repeated as often as may be deemed advisable, or until the pain is relieved.
I am aware that corks have heretofore been provided with a sponge or swab at 'theirlower ends for the purpose of acting as .a brush to spread the contents of the bottle, and I do not therefore desire to claim such a construction, broadly; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, the hereindescribed stopper, consisting of the body A, provided with the shield B and absorbing-pad a, which has a predetermined absorbing and delivering capacity, said pad bestantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the cork or stopper A, of the absorbing-pad at, having a predetermined absorbing and delivering capacity, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM NELSON WELLS.
Witnesses:
ELISHA BASSETT, M. A. DANA.
