UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. GREEN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
RElN-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,488, dated March 29, 1881.
- Application filed September 17, 1880. (No model.)
citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Rein-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to so construct a rein-handle that it will possess the necessary strength, will enable a firm hold to be taken upon the reins, and can be readily applied or removed. These objects I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a pair of reins furnished with my improved rein-handles, and Fig. 2a perspective view of one of the handles, illustrating the method of constructing the same.
In Fig. 1, A A represent a pair of reins, to each of which is attached a handle comprising a buckle, Bgbaving a projecting stem, D, at the end of which is a transverse bar,E, adapted to be grasped by one of the hands of the driver, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. By this means a secure hold upon the reins is assured, and the transverse bar or hand-piece E'is caused toproject from the buckle B to such an extent that the fingers do not come into contact with said buckle or with the rein to which it is adapted.
The bar E is constructed as shown in Fig. 2, on reference to which it will be observed that the stem D of the buckle hasa T-head, a, formed thereon, and adapted for the reception of short tubes, Z), which meet in the center and are notched for thereception of the stem D, the tubes being retained in place by means of nuts d, adapted to the threaded ends of the T-head of the stem. By this means the bar E is provided with a core integral with the stem D, so that the accidental separation of the bar from the stem is effectually guarded against.
The reins are occasionally furnished with buckles of such a size that they could not be passed through the buckle B, it the latter had the usual stationary pivot-bar for the tongue 6. Hence I make the pivot-barf detachable laterally from its bearings in lugs g on the buckle, one end of the bar having a head, i, and the opposite end being threaded for the reception of a thumb-nut, m, whereby the bar is retained in position, but upon removing which the bar can be readily detached, as shown in Fig. 2.
I am aware that rein-handles have heretofore been devised in which buckles were combined with padsto be grasped by the hands, and also that bars adapted to be grasped by the hand have been combined with spring clasps or clamps for the reins; but these lack the necessary strength, and do not permit that firm hold upon the reins which is the main advantage otmy improved rein-handle, and which is essential to safety.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, in a rein-handle, of the buckle B, adapted to the rein, the transverse bar E, and the contracted connecting-stem D, adapted to fit between the fingers, whereby the bar E can be grasped by one hand, all substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the buckle B, having a contracted stem, D, with the bar E, the core a of which is integral with the stem D, as specifled.
3. The combination of the buckle B and contracted stein D with the bar E, comprising a core, a, integral with the stem D, the tubes b, adapted to said core, and the retaining-nuts d, as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GHARL'ES H. GREEN.
