l`-invention `relates :to easement window hardware and has fer@itsobjectionhrovideaneans `wherebyfthe "lower easement `sash may be oper- .a-ted bothasraslid-ing and as za hinged sash, under -cenditions which will --render l#the said sash capable of ready- `manipulation from-theiinside of the building Ifor raising or swinging ef the sash ibut proof ragain-st lunwarranted opening fir-om the outside of the/building. Thus a sash Vequipped in'accordancrw-ith the present /invention lmay Abe opened toaedefinite'ly limited vex- Etenti-ier `purposes 'of ventilation, but lllockeid against further-unauthorized opening from the {outside ofsthebuildingj-by the `same means which `provide -furthe inward swinging of the tsash'to `4facilita-te -cleani-ng or to provide directional ventilationinto -the -room should Athis be desired. jheeinvention l also provides a form of :hinge for l'the sash permitting the aforesaid Vmanipulation thereof and also permitting ready and simple detachment kof Nthe sash `from 'the frame ofthe'window, such as 'for repair or replacement as'with a screen, 'for instance.
vStill further 'the said invention vcontemplates thesprovlision o f asash hinge `affording vertical 1 adjustment as well 'as `swinging adjustment and also certain horizontally sliding'movement Ion the hinge to `facilitate `the ,c learing "of the l*frame work of the windowwhen lthe sash is swung inwardly therefrom.
Still further objects or advantages additional or subsidiary to the aforesaid objects, or resulting from the construction or operation of the invention as it may be carried into effect, will become apparent as the said invention is hereinv after further disclosed.
In carrying the said invention into eiect, I may provide the lower and inner vertically slid-L able sash of a window with a plurality of hinges attaching it to one of the inside stop strips of the window frame, the other inside stop strip, on the opposite vertical edge ofthe sash, being severed intermediate of its height and provided with thumb screws of similarly manually detachable fastenings whereby that part of the said stop strip may be removed when it is desired to swing the sash inwardly of the building, the said hinges being characterized by the plates thereof, which abut the sash, being vertically slotted to receive and permit the vertical movement therein of pins entering the frame work of the sash, the said slots each having enlarged openings intermediate their length to permit attachment and detachment of the said pins to or from the said plates, and horizontally offset upper ends of the said slots 22,

I-B indicates the left inside stop ver Istrip ef the window frame and I1 the right inside stop, which in the present case is severed as by sawing at I8 from the upper portion thereof and is provided with thumb screws I which may be manually detached from the jamb II to permit easy removal of this lower portion of the said stop I1.
Hinges, generally numbered 20, swingably attach the left'hand vertical member of the sash I3 to the stop I6 of the jamb I0, as will be readily seen, and it will be noted that the plates 2i of the hinges 20 which abut the face of the sash frame are each provided with a Vertical slot 22 interrupted by an enlarged opening 23 intermediate the length of the slot, through which opening the heads of studs or pins 24 projecting from the sash frame may be passed to permit the interlocking of the said studs with the slots 22 of the hinges, as will be readily understood. Thus, with the said studs 24 engaged in the slots 22 of the hinges, the said sash I3 is permitted movement vertically withinl the limitation imposed by the length of the said slots 22, the window being fully closed when the studs 24 are at the lower ends of the said slots, and, of course, partially open when the said studs are at the lower sill i2 of the window frame without ob-` l jectionable friction at this point.

the room, both sides are easily accessible for i cleaning and a clear opening provided for access to both sides of the upper sash for cleaning, there being no obstruction of the upper sash such as is ordinarily experienced when the lower" sash is' raised inthe manner of sliding easement windows as ordinarily constructed. A l
Further, if thoughtnecessary or desirablafsuitable means such as an adjustable brace 25 may be provided to secure the' s ash invarious angles of opening to which it maybe swung-, inorder to directa draft at anangle into-the room for instance, but thismeans of securing the sash in such positions of opening is not an essential part vof the present invention and is not described in furtherdetail as it is'obvious rthat any of many -deviceson the market may be used for such pur- IJOSG. f Y
The said sash I3 may be readily detached from its hinges, after it has been partly swung out from the frame, vby simply aligning the studs 24 with the enlargements 23 of the slotsrwhereupon the heads maybe withdrawn through the said enlarged openings; and vwhen the sash is so detached from the hinges it may be openedwide .by sliding ingthe usual Amanner between its stops without the-limitations imposed by the hinges and already described The change from the free opening .to the limited opening arrangement is quite simply effected by this disengagement of 4 the hinges from thesash.
in cases where the thickness lof; the sash and -the size yand .position of-the Ystops may impose an undesirable obstructionto the .freeswinging of the sash on its hinges, I may provide at the lower end of each slot 22 a horizontal offset notch 2B permitting movement of the said studs 24 laterally in to the notches 2S of the hinge plates, during the swinging of the sash, in order that corresponding horizontal movement of the sash may take place to permit the outer vertical frame member of the swinging sash to be moved away from the jamb yIl as the swinging takes place and thus .prevent the saslnby reason of its thiiclrness,` becoming wedged against theopposing 'face of the jambduringthe swinging movement. Y This prevents the necessity of cutting away an undue amount of the rear edge of the right hand vertical frame member of the sash i3, as at 21, so that a maximum true sealing or abutting surface between the said sash frame member and the jamb may be maintained when the parts are in their closed position.
' This invention may be developed within the scope of the following claims without departing from the essential features of the said invention, and it is desired that the specification and drawing be read as being merely. illustrative of a practical embodiment ofthe said invention and not in a strictly hunting sense.
YWhat I claim is:
Vl. In adevice ofthe class described, in combination, a window frame, a vertically slidable sash mounted therein, a removable stop strip on ,said frame for one vertical edge of said sash, and hinges on the opposite side of said frame, said hinges being characterized by pin and slot attachment to the other vertical edge of saidsash permitting limited verticalsliding of said sash, the slots having enlarged openings intermediate their length'whereby the said hinges may be disconnected from said sash when it is partially raised within the sliding vlimitation imposed by said slots, said slots also having horizontally offset recesses at their lower ends,
2. A hinge to provide sliding action, swinging action, and horizontal movement in a window sash, said hingev having a vertical slot in one of the plates thereof with 'an enlarged opening in PRENTIC.
