H. 'W. WINANS. Steam Packing.

V fim $6 N PETEfls. PNOTO-LITHDGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. n. c
HERMAN w. WINANS,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
STEAM PACKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,287, dated March 22, 1881.
Application filed September 18, 1880. (N0 model.)
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN W. WINANS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Steam-Packing and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
It is highly desirable to produce packing of fibrous material of rectangular section. It is also desirable to inclose within such rectangular packing a quantity of rubber, which will contribute, with the elasticity of thefiber itself, to give a proper resilient character to the packing. I have attained both these conditions.
In my patent dated August 19, 1879, No.
218,804., I have set forth that the braid is braided in a square'section. I have now, by repeated experiments, attained a valuable improvement in the means of producing such. I braid the material many times over, braiding on each time a thin layer of fiber. I work in straight yarns, of the same or slightly different material, in the course of the braiding, which straight yarns aid to fill out the corners. The result is a very homogeneous mass, which is very square in cross-section, and which manifests no disposition, like ordinary packing, to assume a circular form. I can work the fiber alone with advantage, the spaces being properly filled with grease; but I prefer to make the packing with a center of soft vulcanized rubber. I introduce the vulcanized rubber in the braiding-machine, and braid on the subsequent layers one by one, each time introducing four straight yarns at the lines which are to form the corners of the packing.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a cross-section, showing a solid square rubber center piece. Fig. 2 is a like section, showing a center composed of several parts.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
Ais the core, of india-rubber. B is the first layer of braid. O is the second layer; D, the third, and E the fourth. The yarns, which are introduced in the corners under each layer, are marked m.
The maohinery by which the operation is conducted may be the ordinary machine for braiding round braid, but equipped with four guidesleading additional strands of the fibrous material into the interior of the braid, and presenting them in the proper positions to form four corners of the square-sectioned braid.
The manufacture of my packing will be easy with this amount of description.
Modifications may be made. The number of layers of the braid B O I) may be increased or diminished. Some portion of the advantage of the invention may be realized by using only one thick layer and one set of cornerstrands. The straight yarns on may be of the same size and of the same material, or of a different size and material. The rubber core A, instead of being of square section, may be round, or of various other section. The rubber core may be omitted altogether, and a bunch of straight strands or yarns run in the middle instead. However made, the fibers should be liberally filled with beef-tallow, or other suitable greasy material, before the packing is introduced into a stuffing-box. ln applying it the lengths may be cut oft to just. the proper length and bent around, so that the ends shall abut together. Thus conditioned the packing is forced down in the stufiing-box. The lengths may be cut off a little obliquely without disadvantage.
I claim as my invention in stea1n-pa-cking-- 1. A stuffing-box packing of square section, having a series of layers of fibrous material, woven or braided, one exterior to the other, with longitudinal cords or strands extending along the corners, as and for the purposes herein specified.
2. The packing described, having a rubber core, A, a series of separate layers of braided fibrous material, B O D, exterior thereto, and with yarns on extending longitudinally in the corners, as herein specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, atNewYork city,New York, this 15th day of September, 1880, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HERMAN W. WINANS.
