Wire Twisting Machine; No. 239,254. Patented March 22,1881.
L ATTORNEYS PETERS, FHOTO-UTHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, n c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IRVING A. KILMER, OF NISKAYUNA, AND ELMER E. KILMER, OF SOHENECTADY, NEW YORK.
WIRE-TWISTING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,254, dated March 22, 1881. Application filed November 20, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, IRVING A. KILMER, of Niskayuna, and ELMER E. KILMER, of Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Wire-Twisting Machines; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a side View, showing our invention applied to a machine. Fig. 2 is a top view of our device. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a front view. Fig. 5 is a view of the tie to be twisted. Fig. 6 is a sectional view, taken on the line x'g of Fig. 3, looking from the front.
This invention relates to wire-twisting devices, and it is intended to hold the loop while it is being twisted.
The invention consists in hereinafter described.
In the annexeddrawings, A is our device, which is designed as a holder. Passing through this holder is a slot, B, whose upper edges, b, are, for a portion of their length, chamfered off, and whose lower opening, 0, is closed by a spring, 0. having a rib, d, fastened thereto, and entering said slot B. In the end a of holder A, to each side of mouth of slot B, is formed a recess, D, said recesses being flared at their months 6, and endingin straight edges 9 at the rear, said recesses opening into the slot B.
Our invention thus described is intended as an improvement upon the holder or graspingblock shown in patent to E. E. and I. A. Kilmer, No. 189,748, April 17, 1877, and it is especially designed for manufacturing baleties of the description shown in patent to I. A. Kilmer, No. 186,579, January 23, 1877.
Figure 1 of the drawings shows a portion of the machine contained'in Patent No. 189,748, sufficient to show the application of our device thereto. In said figure, N represents a frame, having standards P P, carrying the construction a shaft, R, on which is a loose sleeve, S, engaged to said shaft by a pawl and ratchet, both operated by a treadle and cord, and. all constructed and arranged as fully described...in the patent referred to. To the end of shaft R is firmly affixed our holder A, already described.
In Fig. 5 is shown the form of bale-tie especially intended to be twisted in this device.
Z represents the arrow-head, through whose eye 2 the loop of the wire is passed. This device is seated within the holder A, with arrow-head Z resting in slot B, and the bend yy on each side of arrow-head Z resting in recesses D D.
By this construction the holder A has a firm gripe on the arrow-head and loop, and when power is applied toturn the shaft B the wire "of loop will be readily and securely twisted without any danger of slipping.
By means of the spring 0 any width of arrow-head can be accommodated in the same slot, the wider ones pushing the spring down.
In forming loops the wire is inserted through hole 2 of head Z. The latter is placed in slot B with the bent portion of the wire in the recesses D. The chaml'ering of the top edges of slot B facilitates the entrance of the head, if it be thrust in from that direction, and the flare of the recesses the entrance of the sides of the wire into their respective recesses.
What we claim is 1. A holder for twisting loops, having a slot therethrough and recesses at the end on the sides of said slot opening into the slot and flaring outwardly.
2. A holder for twisting loops, having a slot therethrough, one opening of said slot being closed by a spring.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names inthe presence of two witnesses.
IRVING A. KILMER. [11.8.] ELMER E. KILMER. '[L. s] Witnesses JOHN E. MEYERS, WALTER T. L. SANDERS.
