BAND-CAP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,233, dated March 22, 1881. Application filed February 9, 1881. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that we, WILLIAM FINSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and SALT SIMON- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Band-Gaps, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an improvement onthe socalled" double-band caps, comprising a band which is capable of being pulled down to form an cal-and neck protector and foldedor doubled up on the crown of the article when not in use.

In the cap referred to the band is attached to the crown along its lower edge, and an objectionable feature thereof is the difliculty thus experienced in adjustingtheband on the crown. This objection we have overcome by a certain novel attachment of the band to the crownnamely, by folding the band on itself and attaching the inner lap thereof to the crown in a line above its lower edge and below the bight of the band-as hereinafter more fully set forth. 7

This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a cross-section when the band is folded. Fig. 2 is a like section when the band is pulled down or unfolded. The remaining figures illustrate modifications, hereinafter described in detail.

The letterA designates the crown or cover of the cap, and B the band, both of which parts are usually made of cloth. The crown A may be left with a plain edge throughout, as shown in Figs. 1. and 2, or it may be provided with a visor, G, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. The band B isfolded on itself, and the inner lap thereof is attached to the crown, as by stitchesd, in a line which is above the lower edge, e, of the crown and below the bightf of the band, whether the latter is drawn up, as

shown in Figs. 1 and 3, or drawn down, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. lower edge of the crown is formed by one edge of the band B, that portion of the band below the line of the stitches d constituting a portion of the crown and being united with the cap-lining, which, however, for convenience of illustration, is omitted in the drawings. By attaching the band B to the crown in a folded condition (to which is due the position of the line of stitches d on the crown) the band re tains a fold, whether it is drawn to its upper or lower position, and by this means the adjustment of the band on the crown is manifestly facilitated.

In the example shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the band 15 is continuous, or extends entirely around the crown, and that portion of the band which is on the front of the capretains an upper position, by frictional contact, when the band is pulled down on the back of the cap,

What we have termed the 5 while in the example shown in Figs. 3, at, and 6 5 the front half or portion of the band is left detached and rests on the visor C, so as to be held in an upper position by its means.

What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the crown or cover and the band, which is folded on itself, and the inner lap of which is attached to the crown in aline above its lower edge and below the bight of 7 the band.
