UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES ANDERSoN AND JAMES OLIVER, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, AS-
SIGNORS TO SOUTH BEND IRON WORKS, or SAME PLACE.
SLIP-NOSE ATTACHMENT FOR PLOWS.
E SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,135,.dated March 22, 1881.
' Application filed December 18, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, OHARLEs ANDERSON and JAMES OLIVER, of. South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slip-Nose Attachments for Plows; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in slip-nose attachment for plows.
r 5 In Patent N 0. 223,751, granted to J. Oliver January 20, 1880, the nose portion of the share or point is furnished with a plain fiat seat on its upper side, and provided with a recess on its under side. The slip-nose is provided with a jaw or extension, which is seated upon the plain flat seat of the point or share, and with a lip or projection that fits into the recess on the under side of the point or share. This form of plow-point and slip-nose attachment is objec- 2 5 tionable for the reason that a joint is formed at the side of the nose, allowing of the entrance of soil and preventing the free working of the point. Further, the slip-nose is not provided with a sufficientlateral bracing, so that undue strain is imparted to the fastening-bolt.
Again, we are aware that the nose portion of a plow-point has been formed with a slit or recess, within which has been inserted the shank of aremovable nose. This construction 3 5 of plow-point is objectionable for the reason that the divided or slitted nose portion of the share or point is liable to become broken in use, and thus destroy the entire point or share.
The object of our invention is to obviate c the defects and objectionable features in plowin the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a plow-point provided with our improved slip-nose attachment. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section taken through the plow-point and slip-nose. Fig. 3 is a trans- 5 verse vertical section of the same. Fig. 4 is a view, in perspective, of the plow-point and slip-nose disconnected from each other.
A represents the plow point or share, the nose portion of which is provided with grooves a a on its upper and lower sides. Grooves a a are of any desired length and at the central portion of the nose, whereby there is formed side walls or bearings, a, on each side of both the upper and lower grooves, a a.
Slip-nose B may be of any desired form on its forward or wearing end. Its rear end is furnished with the two jaws b b, which are adapted to fit snugly within the grooves a a on the upper and lower sides of the nose portion of the share or plow-point, the slip-nose B being secured in place by means of the bolt 0. The surface of the upper jaw is flush with the upper surfacejfof Ethejplow-point, sojthat the workingor wearing surface of the latter is made. 7 5 smooth and unbroken. Both jaws of theslipnose have an extended face-bearing on the web portion 1 of the point or share, wherehy the slip-nose is firmly braced against displacement byreason of upward or downward pressure on So the outer end of thejslip-n ose. i, The sidesfof the jaws b b fit against the ide walls, a a, of both the upper andlower grooves, andgthus prevent any lateral displacement of the slip-nose. By reason of the extended face and side bearings of the jaws blbfonthe nose portion of the plowpoint the slip-nose is firmly held in position, and but slight strain is borne by the attachingbolt 0. Further, the nose portion of the plowpoint, being constructed without any slit or openingtherei n, is rendered strong and durable.
In order to increase the durability of the slip-nose, the jawslb .b and contiguous portion thereof are annealed; and the forward portion of the slip-nose protected against the anneal- 5 ing process, the line 00 m of the drawings indicatin g approximately the dividing-line between the annealed and the unannealed portions of the slip-nose. This process insures strength and toughness of the metal forming the jaws roo vided with two jaws practically equal in.
length, and which fit within said grooves, and are thus furnished with extended face-bearings on the web between said grooves, and
with extended lateral or side hearings on the side walls of the grooves, and a fastening-bolt 15 which extends through the two jaws and web, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 13th day of December, 1880.
