W. A. SUTTON. Skate.
Patented March 22,1881.
. WITNESSES ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFicE.
WILLIAM A. SUTTON, OF NEW, YORK, N. Y.
SKATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,121, dated March 22, 1881.
Application filed December 20, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. SUTTON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in that class of skates which are attached by means of heel and sole clamps to the shoe or boot and the invention consists in providing the runner, at the rear end, with laterally-extending guide shoulders or brackets below the heel-plate, in combination with an adjustable heel-clamp having parallel shanks, and with an adjusting-screw passing through a central eye of the heel-clamp, and a threaded opening intermediately between the guide-brackets of the runner.
. or brackets a,which form, with the heel-plate,
guides for the parallel shanks b of the adj ustable heel-clamp G. The heel-clamp G is adjusted by means of a screw, D, which passes through a central downward-extending eye, 0, of the heel-plate O, and which screws into a center nut, f, intermediatelybetween the transverse brackets a, so as to set the. heel-clamp firmly to the heel and secure the latter rigidly between the adjustable heel-clamp G and the fixed clamp cl, which is preferably cast in one piece with the runner, as customary in this class'of skates.
The essential feature of my improvement consists in providing the runner with laterally-extendingguide-brackets, along which the parallel shanks of the adjustable heel-clamp are guided, which construction admits the direct assembling of the parts without riveting or other expensive hand-work, so that this class of skates can be manufactured in a cheaper (but just as reliable and durable) manner than the more expensive kinds of skates.
Having thus described my invention, I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an improvement in skates, the combination of the runner, having at its rear end laterally-extending guide-brackets below the heelplate, with an adjustable heel-clamp, the parallel shanks of which are guided by the brackets and heel-plate, and with an adjustingscrew, which passes centrally through an eye of the heel-clamp and a screw-nut between the rear brackets of the runner, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 14th day of December, 1880.
WILLIAM A. SUTTON.
