2 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in machines for cutting circles in steel or other metal plates by an oxy-acetylene torch mounted on the outer end of an electrically operated swinging arm.
A further object is to provide a device of this character of simple practical construction which is efficient and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view,
Figure 2 is a top plan view,
Figures 3 and 4 are sectional views taken respectively on the lines 3-3 and 4-4 of Figure l, and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the adjusting bolts.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numerals 5 and 6 designate upper and. lower base plates supported in vertically spaced relation by posts 1. Feet 8 on the underside of the lower plate 5 support the base on the work.
A vertical shaft 9 is journaled in the plates 5 and 6 on which a gear I is secured. Ashort vertical shaft H is also journaled in the upper plate and also has a gear 12 secured thereto. The gears in and i2 are rotated in synchronism in a uniform direction by a pinion l3 secured to a shaft I l also joumaled in the upper plate 5 and operatively connected to an electric motor [5 through a reduction gearing (not shown) in a housing It on one end of the motor. The shaft 54 is formed of interconnected sections. The motor is controlled by means of a switch I1.
To the upper end of the shaft 9 is secured a horizontal am ill by a collar l9, the upper surface of the arm having a dove-tail groove 20 therein in which is slidably positioned a flared square-shaped head 2! on a bolt 22 rising from the arm.
A connecting rod 23 is formed intermediate its ends with a bore 2d having a bushing 25 loosely mounted therein and in which is journaled the bolt 22.
An adjusting nut 26 is threaded on the top of the bolt to bind the head 2| in adjusted position in the dove-tail groove 20 of the arm 18. An arm 21 is also secured to the shaft II by a collar 28 and is also formed in its upper surface with a dove-tail groove 29 slidably receiving the head of a bolt 30 in the inner end of the connecting rod 23 secured in adjusted position by an adjusting nut 3|, the bolt 30 being similar in construction to the bolt 22.
To the outer end of the connecting rod 23 is secured a standard machine cutting torch 32 by means of a clamp 33.
The arm I8 is provided with grad-nations 34 in inches and fractions thereof to indicate the adjustment of the connecting rod in the arms.
From the foregoing it will be apparent the torch may be swung in a circle over the Work for cutting the same by means of the swinging action of the connecting rod 23 through the arms 18 and 21.
It is believed the details of construction, operation and manner of use of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. A readily portable circle cutting machine including a supporting base having spaced upper and lower plates and adapted to solidly rest on a flat surface, spaced vertical shafts journaled in said upper plate at permanently fixed points and projecting upwardly therefrom, gears on said shafts directly beneath the upper plate, a motor mounted in the base upon the lower plate, means operatively connecting said motor to said shafts for driving them at similar speeds in the same direction and including a gear driven by the motor and arranged between and meshing with the first-named gears, fiat horizontal arms fixed on the upper ends of said shafts, a horizontal I- beam connecting rod having an end portion flatly resting on said arms and provided with spaced vertical bearings at permanently fixed points, vertical bolts journaled in said bearings, said bolts being carried by and adjustable longitudinally of said arms to correspondingly adjust the connecting rod relative to said shafts, the other end portion of said connecting rod projecting outwardly beyond one side of the base, and means on the outer end of said connecting rod to support a cutting torch in an upright position with its tip in proximity to the surface on which the base is placed, whereby the machine may be placed on a sheet from which the circle is to be cut.
2. A readily portable circle cutting machine including a supporting base having spaced upper and lower plates and adapted to solidly rest on a flat surface, spaced vertical shafts journaled in said upper plate at permanently fixed points and projecting upwardly therefrom, gears on saidshafts directly beneath the upper plate, a motor mounted in the base upon the lower plate, means operatively connecting said motor to said shafts for driving them at similar speeds in the same direction and including a gear driven by the motor and arranged between and meshing with the first-named gears, flat horizontal arms fixed on the upper ends of said shafts, a horizontal I- beam connecting rodehavving anend portinnflafly resting on said arms :and provided with spaced vertical bearings at permanently fixed points, vertical bolts journaled in said bearings, said bolts being carried by and adjustable longitudinally of said arms to correspondingly the connecting rod relative to said shafts .the other end portion of said connecting rod projecting outwardly beyond one side of the base, and means on the outer end of said connecting rod to support a cutting torch in an upright position with its tip in proximity to the surface on which the base is placed, whereby the machine may be placed on a sheet from which the circle is to be cut, said arms having undercut longitudinal grooves in the upper surfaces thereof, said bolts having heads slidably engaged in said grooves, and 21111 115 011 ithe upper ends of said bolts to retain the connecting rod on the bolts and to secure the bolts in adjusted positions relative to the arms.
