Description

(No Modem M. DAVIS.
Hat and Gap Adaptable to Heads of Different-Sizes.
No. 238,865. Patented March 15,1881.
N. PETERS. PHOTOUTHOGRAFHE5, WASMNGTON. D c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARK DAVIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAT AND CAP ADAPTABLE T0 HEADS OF DIFFERENT SIZES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Iletters Patent No. 238,865, dated March 15, 1881;
Application filed January 24, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, MARK DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hats and Caps Adaptable to Heads of Different Sizes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to furnish a hat or cap with a flange for supporting the and B the inwardly-projecting elastic band or flange arranged at or near its lower edge. This flange is so constructed and arranged, as hereinafter described, that it is adapted to yield vertically in fitting it on the head, and also to yield radially entirely around the crown to adapt itself to the shape and size of the head. In this example the elastic band B is formed of a strip of muslin or other fabric, which is folded lengthwise, and into the bight or fold of which is introduced an elastic cord, 0, so that the folded strip is kept distended in an inner horizontal direction by the action of the cord. The elastic band, however, can be formed also in other ways-as, for example, of a piece of elastic webbing. In. this example, moreover, the elastic band B is secured in its position by stitches, which, in part, serve also to connect the crown A of the hat to its brim,
(No model.)
the elastic band being, in fact, secured to the inner edge of the brim; but, if desired, other means may be used for securing the band, and if desired the band may be secured to the crownas, for example, in a cap.
It will be readily understood that by the elastic band B the hat or cap is rendered capable of adjusting itself both to the size of a head and to its shape, and hence I not only insure a good fit, but also materially reduce the stock necessary to be kept on hand in stores where hats and caps are kept for sale.
Heretofore hats and caps have been provided around the lower edge of the crown with a corrugated leather to provide a ventilator for the hat or cap; but such does not constitute my invention, and is not claimed by me.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a hat or cap, of a flat elastic flange attached at its outer edge around the lower edge of the crown of the hat or cap, and projecting horizontally in an inward direction, and forming a support which will yield vertically and radially entirely around the hat or cap, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a hat or cap, of the band B, folded lengthwise, and having in its bight or fold the elastic cord 0, the outer edges of the band being stitched around the lower edge of the crown of the hat or cap, and projecting horizontallyin an inward direction to form a vertically and radially yielding support, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two sub: scribing witnesses.
