SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,793, dated March 15, 1881.

Application filed July 15, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER J. LEsLIE, of Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inhaling Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an inhaling-box for use in treating catarrh, 8m. and it consists in the combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view, and Fig. 2 an elevation, of an apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation.

In the said drawings, A is a box of suitable dimensions, to hold the substance from which the vapor inhaled is given off. This box A is suitably shaped to conform to the contour of the face above the upper lip. It is provided with nozzles 13, adapted to enter one or both the nostrils.

O is a perforated diaphragm, which rests between the nozzles and the material in the box. The object of this-perforated diaphragm is to prevent the material from sifting out through the nozzles, and also serves to distribute the vapors uniformly through the box before being inhaled through the nozzles. The nozzles B are made adjustable up or down, preferably by a screw-thread. This adjustment brings them nearer to or farther from the diaphragm O, and thereby regulates the freedom of flow through the nozzles, so that the patient may inhale more or less vapor by adjusting the nozzles farther out or farther in, as the case may be.

D is a strap or band adapted to pass around the head, and hold the box in position upon the upper lip.

This apparatus may be worn Without any inconvenience during the day when the wearer is attending to other business; and when he retires it may be fastened in position and worn without inconvenience during the night.

I am aware that flexible bags have been provided with inhaling-tubes to be applied to the nostrils; further, that receptacles have been furnished for attachment over the month, 110 inhaling-nozzles being provided; and hence I make no claim to such forms of apparatus or appliances. My invention consists in an arc-shaped box provided with a detachable cover having two inhaling tubes or nozzles adapted to enter the nostrils, said box provided with a perforated diaphragm, and having straps attached thereto for securing the box or receptacle in place.

What I claim is- An inhaling apparatus consisting of an areshaped box provided with a detachable cover furnished with two inhaling nozzles or tubes adapted to enter the nostrils, said box being provided with a perforated diaphragm and furnished with straps to secure it in place, substantially as set forth.
