TINTTEE 'STATES PATENT @Erica HENRY LINES, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
CARRIAGE-TOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,597, dated March 8, 1881. Application filed January 11, 1881. (No model.)
To alt whom it may Concern Be it known that I, HENRY LINES, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carriage-Tops, of which the following is a description.
My improvement relates to that class of carriage-tops which are known under the designation of landaulette tops,77 which part near the middle, the parts dropping in opposite directions.
My invention is confined to the front part ofthe top; and it consists in the novel construction of the parts and means for folding this part to bring it within the required space, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of the front part of the top, of. a portion of the back part, and of the front part of a carriage-body. Fig. 2 is a View of the frame of the front part, the upper parts of the same being shown in the position which they assume as they are turned to the position in which they are represented by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a section oi' the upper parts of one side ofthe front part of the frame.
To enable others to make my improved top so that it can be folded in the manner intended, I will describe it in detail.
The parts indicated by the letter A are the l posts supporting the front part of the top and are hinged at their lower ends, so that they may be turned to the horizontal position shown by the broken lines in Fig. l.
B, Figs. l and 3, is the front part of the frame, and is hinged to the flat bars of iron et, as shown in Fig. 2, and in section in Fig. 3, so that it may be turned to a vertical position, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. l. It has the usual fastenings, by which it is held to the posts, which are not shown.
C (shown in all the gures) is also a part of the top frame, and is hinged to the part B, as shown in Fig. 3, so that it may be turned to a vertical position and against the part B, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. l.
D, Fig. 1, is a portion of the back part of the top frame, the letter :v denoting the dividing-line between the two parts.
E is the front part of a carriage-bod y, F bev ing the drivers seat.
The two liat bars of iron a have pivotal connections with the posts A, and also with the hinges connecting the bars to the part B, the parts or straps of the hinges being indicated by the letter n, and the pivotal connections with the hinges are made above the ends of the straps, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
' Through one strap of each hinge, near its end,
a hole is made, and holes are made through the bars c to come in line with the holes in the straps. Through these holes the threaded bolts I) are turned into threaded holes in dat bars ofiron attached to the posts to hold the straps ofthe hinges and the at bars ain line and to the posts.
The front parts ot' the frame, being constrncted as above described, are folded in the following manner: The parts B and C are turned to a vertical position, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, the bolts b are removed, and the parts are turned in a plane parallel with a plane through the posts A to the position shown by the broken lines in Fig. 2. The bolts b are then inserted and the front part of the frame is turned to the horizontal position, in which they are shown by the broken lilies in Fig. l.
I am well aware that the front parts of carriage-top frames have been constructed so as to fold, and I do not broadly claim a front part so constructed ,z but What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described front part of a carriagetop frame, consisting, essentially, of the posts A, hinged at their lower ends, of the front part, B, hinged to the flat bars a, of the part C, hinged to the part B, ofthe bars c, having pivotal connections with the posts A and with the strapsn of the hinges, and of the bolts b, all the said parts constructed and combined substantially as shown and set forth.
HENRY LINES.
