UNITED [STATES HENRY LINES, OF .NEW' HAVEN, dd'rinnorlon'r.
'IIMPROVEMENT m LANDAU-CARRIAGE TOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,372.,Idated March 7, 1876 application filed January 31, 1876.
. To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY LINES, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State .of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Landau Oarriages; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,'and-exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which drawings- Figure 1 is aside elevation, with thetop closed, showing by dotted lines the position of the springs. Fig. 2 is a top view, with the front hood folded down, showing the springs and connecting-rods. Fig. 3 is a transverse section, showing the inner'face'of the front pillars, with the springs and rods adjusted in recesses in the pillars. Fig. 4 is a side view of the front part of the top, folded down, with side of front pillar and top rail broken off, showing the position of the springs and rods.
My. invention; relates to landau carriages having glass windowsin the front and sides of the front hood; and it consists of springs, adjusted in recesses in the front pillars and top rails of the front hood, for balancing the front top in folding and raising the same, as hereinafter fully described.
A is the body of the carriage, and B represents the front pillars of the top, which pillars are provided with recesses a a, in which spiral springs b b are adjusted onrods a c, the upper ends of which are provided with screws andnuts, forming the bearings of the upper ends carriage. These springs and rods are inclosed in the recesses in the pillars by plates a a, so that they occupy no space in the carriage and vin a recess in the upper part of the front doorpost E. In constructing the tops to be operated by the flat springs each top rail D and D is provided with a similar spring.
The spiral springs are contracted and the flatspring bent downward when the top is folded down,as shown in Fig. 4, in which position the, force of the springs bears the top upward, preventing it fromfalling and injuring the parts or breaking the glass in folding, and aiding in raising the top to its upright position.
.Either the spiral springs or the flat springs may be used alone without the others, or, 'to secure greater force, both kinds may be used, as shown. And the lugs d 61 may be made,
and attached to the posts, separate from the hinges.
' What I claim as new, and desire to secure by lietters Patent, in a folding-top carriage,
my own invention,I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
- HENRY LINES.
