DRAFT CONTROL Filed'llarch 22, 1944 I nverz'tor all/721.55 6. Baez/v Patented Sept. 18, 1945 UNITED STATES i ATENT OFFICE DRAFT CONTROL Charles C. Buren, Yakima, Wash.
Application March 22, 1944, Serial No. 527,612
1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in draft; controls for furnaces, heaters, and the like, the principal object in view being to provide a simply constructed, efiicient, check draft damper equipped for easy and quick installation in the chimney flue pipe of any furnace or heater and for pre-setting to open in variable degree under variations in the suction created in the flue pipe by variations in the chimney draft.
Other and subordinate objects are also comprehended by my invention, all of which, together with the precise nature of my improvements, will be readily understood when the succeeding de scription and claims are read with reference to the drawing accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in plan, partly in section, illustrating my improved draft control in its preferred embodiment installed in the chimney flue pipe of a furnace,
Figure 2 is a view in front elevation of the control drawn to an enlarged scale,
Figure 3 is a view in side elevation, and
Figure 4 is a view in plan partly broken away and shown in section.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, my improved draft control, as illustrated, comprises a flat ring-like frame I adapted to be bolted, as at 2, to a circumferential radial flange 3 on the outer end of a thimble 4 suitably extended laterally from the chimney flue pipe 5 of a furnace E. The frame I acts as a support for a disc-like damper l fitting in the frame I with the requisite clearance providing for opening and closing of the damper. The damper l is swingably mounted on the frame 1 by means of a pair of trunnions 8 suitably secured to the outer face of said damper to extend from opposite sides of the same into a pair of hinge barrels 8 suitably secured on said frame. As best shown in Figure 2, the trunnions 8 and barrels 9 are horizontally aligned and disposed well above the horizontal center of the damper 1 so that the latter is overbalanced to normally swing into closing position in the frame I. As will be understood, when the damper 1 is closed, said damper is disposed in the plane of the frame I.
The described damper is equipped with a counterbalance device in the form of a right angled rod forming a stem 9 and a lateral arm it at the upper end of said stem. The stem 9 is rotatably mounted in the vertical center of the damper 1 on the outer face of said damper and to extend above the same, the mounting comprising a pair of clip-like keepers H suitably secured to said damper l, as at 12. The stem 9 is frictionally fitted in the keepers l I so that it may be rotated therein into different set positions. A counterweight I3 is provided on the arm ill and preferably is slidably fitted on said arm for variable setting along the same.
The use and operation of the described draft control will be readily understood. By rotating the stem 9, in the keepers H, the arm l0 and counterweight l3 may be swung into different set positions in front of the axis of swinging movement of the damper 1 to variably counterbalance the damper 1 so that said damper will be swung open, for instance as shown by dotted lines in Figure 3, indifferent degree under different degrees of suction created in the flue pipe 5 by variations in the draft from the chimney. Thus, the control may be pre-set to open in predetermined degree and check the furnace under different draft conditions as occasion may require. Also, the arm I 0 and counterweight I3 may be swung, if desired, to overbalance the damper into open position under any draft conditions obtaining in the chimney through pipe 5.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive conept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
In combination with the chimney flue pipe of a furnace, a draft control comprising a thimble extending laterally from said pipe, a disc-like damper pivot means mounting said damper on the outer end of said thimble for swinging movement about an eccentric horizontal axis into opening position and overbalanced to normally assume closing position, and means on said damper for variably counterbalancing the same comprising a right angled rod including a stem and a lateral arm at the upper end of the stem, means rotatably mounting said stem on said damper in the vertical center thereof to extend above the same, said mounting means frictionally locking the stem against rotation, and a counterweight on said arm.
CHARLES C. BUREN.
