COMBINATION SLIDING AND ROLLING LIGHT SCREEN I Filed Aug. 2, 1943 FREDERICK W. HOLSTEIN INVENTOR.
Bar W ATTORNEY.
Patented Sept. 4, 1945 GGMBINATION SLIDING AND ROLLING LIGHT SCREEN I Frederick W. Holstein, Westfield, N. J.
Application August 2, 1943, SerialjNo. 496,996
' 8 Claims. (01. 16085) My invention relates .to combination sliding and rolling light screens such as window shades, curtains or blinds and has particular reference to window shades or the like slidably mounted on a support and having overlapping spaced portions provided with spaced openings such that sliding of the shade on its support permits the positioning of the spacedopenings inone portion in various relationships with similar openings in the other portion as, for example, to interceptdirect sunlight while permitting vision and ventilation or, for example, to provide complete interception of light and at the same time, if desired, to roll up in use as an ordinary window shade, door or porch screen.
My invention .is notlimited to but has particular reference to the use of tough, opaque paper sh'ades or the like, cheap to make, easy to clean and readily disposed of and replaced when faded,
though any suitable material may be used. A
shade embodying my invention not only is slidable on its support, preferably the usual spring type window shade roller, but may be rolled up like any window shade, in which case the two hanging, overlapping, spaced portions become adjacent, like a double thickness of shade, roll up together as little or as far as desired and in such manner that the adjacent hanging portions coact to make an opaque shade, the diameter of the roller being such that when the two hanging portions come together the openings of one portion are closed by overlapping opaque spaces of the other portion (Fig. 4)
Among the objects of my invention is the provision of a satisfactory light screen of .low cost which permits ventilation and shuts out direct sunlight, as desired. Another object is the provision of an easily hung shade, readily cleaned or replaced. Still another object is to provide a desirable form of shade not easily pulled from its support and which is simple to install.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, as will be apparent to those skilled in the art as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction described in this specification and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the particular embodiment of the invention within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention. I intend no limitation other than those of the claims when fairly interpreted in the light of the full disclosure and the present state of the art.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is afragmentaryassembly view illustrative of a preferred embodiment of my inventionincluding the usual shade roller,- a perforated slotted shade slidably mounted on said roller and a pull cord-to actuate said roller; Fig. 2 is an end view of the assembly of Fig. 1 without the pull cord; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view illustrativeof the-shade of Fig. '1; Fig. 41s an end view similar to Fig. 2 as the shade is starting to roll up; Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate modifications of the assembly of Fig. 1. Similar eference characters relate to similar parts in all views.
Turning first to the shade illustrated in Fig. 3, this may be a single or composite sheet of thin,
tough, flexible and, preferably, opaque fibrous,
woven, or flowed material such as paper, sheet plastic, cloth or other suitable material. I prefer a suitable opaque paper which can be cleaned and is readily and cheaply replaced if faded or a change is desired, as for a new color scheme. Preferably it is somewhat greater than twice the length of the light openin it is to shade. It may be provided with one or more longitudinal slots Ill, It, for the reception of and guidance on a fastening member or members 9, 9, (Fig. 1).
At either end of thc slots In there are portions of the shade perforated with, in this case, long, narrow, transverse openings 8, 8, regularly spaced, the space between the openings preferably being slightly wider than the openings in order that when the shade is rolled the openings 8, 8, may be overlapped (Fig. 4). The two portion of the shade are symmetrical with respect to the slots l0, l0.
In some instances it may be desirable to provide a composite shade structure'as in Fig. 5, for example, comprising a slotted portion 5 and flexible tapes 4, 4, to the number desired connected thereto, said tapes carrying slats 3, 3, of any suitable, preferably opaque, material fastened to the tapes to provide regularly spaced and parallel transverse openings 2, 2, or the tapes themselves may be provided with guiding slots I, l, as in Fig. 6.
The shade, however constructed, may be hung from any suitable support but preferably is draped or hung over the usual shade roller 1 and slidably connected thereto by tacks 9 or the like. If desired, a pull cord 6 (Fig. 1) may be provided to actuate the spring roller but either hanging portion of the shade may be pulled to release the roller spring as is done with any window shade. The space at the top of the depending portions maybe and preferably is of such length compared with the size of the roller 1 that when the curtain is rolled up (Fig. 4) the openings in one portion will be blacked out by the opaque material of the other portion and the shade, rolling up double, may be used like any other window shade.
In use, the ordinary shade roller or other support may be slipped between the hanging portions of the shade, tacks 9 or other suitable fastening devices positioned in the slots l and the shade roller put up in suitable brackets, such as the present shade brackets, for example. Thereafter the shade may be rolled up and down in the usual way but when drawn down completely over a part or all the window, door, or other light opening, the shade will hang double, the portions spaced, and it may be slid back and forth over the roller, guided by the slots ID, in order to position the openings of one hanging portion as desired with relation to the openings of the other, hanging portion.
-What I claim is:' A I 1. .As an article of manufacture, a shade comprising symmetrical portions spaced from each other. and each provided with spaced openings and in the space between said portions provided with one or more slots extending longitudinally of the shade adapted for the passage therethrough of fastening members.
2. As an article of manufacture, a shade comprisingga body of thin, flexible and substantially opaque material provided with at least one slot extending longitudinally of the shade and portionsat the ends of said slot symmetrical with respect thereto and each provided With a series of spaced and similar openings extending transversely of the shade and parallel to each. other, the space between said parallel openings being at leastfas great as thewidth of said openings.
7 3. A shade comprising similar portions hanging down on each side of a support and spaced from each other, each said portion being provided with regularly spaced openings extending transversely of the shade and parallel to each other, the space between said parallel openings being at least as great as the width of said openings and means to slidably connect said shade to said support to facilitate the alignment of the transverse openings in one portion of said shade with respect to the transverse openings in the other portion thereof.
4. A structure as defined in claim 3 in which said slidably connecting means facilitates the alignment of the spaced openings of one said portion with the spaces between the spaced openings of the other portion when said shade is unrolled.
5. As an article of manufacture, a shade comprising a body of flexible material provided with slots and portions at either end of said body of material connected therewith and symmetrical with respect thereto and each provided with a series of spaced and similar openings at right angles to said slots and parallel to each other, the spacebetweensaid parallel openings being greater than the width of said openings and of substantially opaque material.
6. A structure as defined inclaim 5 in which said portions are connected to said body of flexible material by means including a tape member and said portions comprise slats of opaque material connected to said tape member.
' '7. A shade provided with similar portions, each said portion comprising a series of spaced and parallel and substantially opaque members and means to mount said shade comprising a flexible member provided. with atleast' one slot at right angles to said opaque members. i
8. A shade doubled upon itself over a support and otherwise free and comprising two 'dependent like portions connected only at their adjacent ends and downwardly projecting in parallel planes, each of said portions being provided with a series of spaced and similar openings extending transversely of .the shade and means to slidably connect said shade to said support.
