FRANK HENRY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
MILK AND PRESERVE JAR.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 238,287, dated March 1, 1881.
Application filed August 20, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK HENRY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mill; and Preserve Jars, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the jar embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof in line :10 ac, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top or plan view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the three figures.
This invention relates to jars in which the cover is cl-ampedupon the body of the jar by a device supported by a pivoted or riveted bail.
The nature of said invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a jar or can, which maybe of ordinary form and construction, and B represents the cover, having a channel or groove to receive a gasket, a, which rests on the top edge of the jar for forming a tightjoint between thejar and cover.
0 represents a base, consisting of a ring or plate having a circainferential upright flange, (I, to opposite sides of which are pivoted or riveted bails l), which extend perpendicularly and have their upper portions, 1), turned inwardly or toward each other, the ends being connected by a rivet, d, on which is fitted an eccentric lever, E. The halls may, however, be formed of one piece and may pass entirely around the base. The base 0 is of diameter to circumseribe the bottom of the jar, and may be a complete disk, an annulus, or ring. \Vhen lhejar is lliRH't'li on the base the bails l) e.\' tend or are swung parallel with the sides of thejar, and are of such height that the lever E is in contact, or nearly so, with the center of the cover B, which has a depression as a contact-surface for said lever.
The jar is filled with the material intended to be preserved or transported and located on the base 0. The lever E is then rotated so that its head tightens on the cover B, and the pressure exerted forces the cover firmly on the jar, thus securely closing the jar and retaining the base and bails as one thereon. The bails, being elastic, adapt themselves to inequalities of the jar, and during the tightening operation of the lever E the ends of said bails connected by the rivet and pivot d of the lever yield as said pivot rises and afterward retain their elasticity, whereby strain on the jar, cover, and bails is prevented.
The portions D of the bails are arched or bent, and so elevated above the cover B that they provide means of being grasped by or suspended from the hand or fingers for conveniently and readily carrying the jar.
The end of the lever E has a laterally-extending lip, E, which is adapted to engage or snap with one of the bails when the lever is tightened on the cover, thus locking said lever and preventing its accidental disengagement. 7o \Vhen, however, the jaris to be opened, power is exerted on the lever, in order to force the lip E from the bail, and said lever is rotated to release the cover of pressure of said lever. The jar, with its cover, may then. be lifted from the base (J, or the cover first removed from the jar and the latter then (lisplaced from the base.
It will be noticed that the base 0 presses equally on the bottom ofthe jar, or the circumferential edge thereof, and serves as a protector to said bottom and edge, and, furthermore, permits a plain cylindrical jar to be used. The flange b of the base assists in locating the jar in position and preventing shifting thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The circumscribing base 0 and upright bails 1), attached thereto, in combination with 0 lever E, having an eccentric head, and pivoted to said bails, substantiall as set forth.
1.. The base 0 and bails l), in combination with the locking-lever E, the axis or pivot d whereof connects or rivets the ends of said 5 bails, substantially and for the purpose set forth.
FRANK HENRY.
