Description

Aug. 14, 1945. c. s. OLSON WHEELED FIGURE TOY Filed May 25, 1945 Patented Aug. 14, 1945 .QQFFICE WHEELED moons Ton Ii Charles S; am, Gul fpo rt Miss. v Application May 23, 1945,. Serial No. 595,447. 6 Claims. o1.:46i"1"q7') f This invention relatesto a wheeled figure toy andit is a particular object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which is attrac' tive to'the eyes of a small child and which, when moving, will cause considerable amusement. 4 I Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a toy comprising a plurality of figures together with means whereby said figures will be caused to have simultaneous moveinent one with respect to the other when the device is moving.
It is still further an object of the invention to provide'a to'y of this kind comprising two figures mounted for relative movement together with an elementconnecting said figures' wh ere by is simulated an action 'of said'figures endeavorin to tug 'orpull the connecting element one from the other. j
The invention consists in the details of con struction and in-the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved toy whereby certain important advantages are at tained and. the article rendered simpler, less' expensive and otherwise more convenient and s advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth,
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view partly in vertical section and partly in side elevation of a toy constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention, the line of section being substantially on the line A-A of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Figure 2 is a view in top plan of the toy as herein embodied; and
Figure 3 is a view in front elevation.
In the embodiment of the invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, I denotes side plates of predetermined design and which are substantially in duplicate and arranged side by side in predetermined spaced relation.
The upper portions of the side plates I have interposed therebetween and adhesively or otherwise securely fastened thereto, a spacer strip 2. This strip 2 is substantially of a length coextensive with the lengths of the side plates I at the upper portions thereof.
Outwardly of but in close proximity to the side plates I are the ground engaging wheels 3 of' desired :diameteraand'whichare fixed to the extended extremities of thesshaft-l disposed through and rotatably supported by the. lower portions ofzthe side plates I at substantially the longitudinal 1 centers thereof.
Positioned between theside plates I and also fixed 'tothe shaft 4 is an elliptical cam member 5S As' isclearly; illustrated in Fig. 1 the shaft 4 is -midway of-;this-cam member 5. Connecting with thei'peripheral edgecof the cam.member 5 are: thelower portionsqof the elongated rocker levers 6 whichjare' supported for required swingin'g; movement by thecrosspinsflinterposed betweenand supported by. the side platesl at points above but in closeproximity-to the spacer strip 2. These pins 1 are also equi-distantly spaced foreiand ,aftjof the shaft '4. .The levers ,6 are constantly-urged toward and maintained in contact withthe cammember 5 by a retractile memberizfiuof requisite tension and herein disclosed as? aurubber band. 1 1
Theaupper portions of the levers tare directed throughthe'inner, extremities of the alined slots 9. inithe opposite-end portions of thespacer;
I strip Z:-1;.-'I'he1levers B aboVethegpinsI are continued by the upwardly and outwardly inclined short levers I0 which are herein disclosed as being in simulation of the legs of a bird. The outer portions of these levers I0 are rigid with the body plates B herein disclosed as simulating a bird. It is to be noted that the plates B are so formed and designed as to have their upper extremities in imitation of bird heads with the bills or beaks II thereof inwardly disposed or directed one toward the other.
Interposed between and connected to the bills or beaks I I of the plates B are the extremities of a flexible member I2 in simulation of a worm and the length of this flexible member I2 between its connections with the bills or beaks I I is such asto be substantially straight and taut when the cam member 5 is in a vertical position and the body plates B caused to swing outwardly under the action of the retractile member 8, as indicated by broken lines in Fig. 1 of the drawing. As the cam member 5 moves from the vertical toward the horizontal, the upper portions of the body plates Bwill swing inwardly or one towards the other resulting in a drooping of the flexible member I2 and, of course, as the cam member 5 moves from the horizontal to the vertical, the upper por- Riveted, as at 14, to the side plates I at the, upper rear portions thereof is the lower end portion of an upwardly and rearwardly directed handle member l of required length. It is to be pointed out that the slots 9 in the spacer strip 2 are of such lengths readily to permit the lower or tail portions of the body plates B to move therethrough so that no hindrance or obstruction w1ll be offered to the desired rocking movement of said platesB when :the wheels 3 are in rotation, v
It is also to be-=noted that the desired move. ments of the body plates B will be effected upon either push or pull of the toy. I
From the foregoing description it is believed to be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without-departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to lee-understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and, formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed. 7 r
I 'I claim:
l. A wheeled figure toy comprising a'ebo'dy member, a wheeled supported shaft carried by the body member, a cam member fixed tolthe shaft, rocker levers carried by the body member and contacting the cam member, a retractile member interposed between and connecting the levers for constantly urging the -='same into' contact with the cam member, outwardly and upwardly inclined lever-s carried by'the'upper pore tions of the first levers, body plates carried by the second levers simultaneously "moving toward or away from each other 'up'on rotation of the cam member. a
2. A wheeled figure tfoy comprising a body member, a wheeled supported shaft carried by the body member, 'a cam member fixed to the shaft, rocker levers carried by the body member and contacting the cam member, a retractile member interposed between and connecting the levers for constantly urging the same'int'o contact with the cam member, outwardly andjupwarolly' inclined levers carried by the-upper portions of the first levers, body plates carried by .the second levers simultaneously moving toward Y 4. A toy of the class described comprising spaced side plates, a wheel carrying shaft carried by' -the lower portions of the side plates substantially midway thereof, a cam member fixed to the shaft and positioned between the side plates,
means above theshaft for supporting said levers between the side plates for rocking movement, said levers being of a length to contact the cam member, aretractile element 'coacting with the leversfor constantly urging the levers into con- 7 ing the upper portions: of the body plates, said flexible member of a length to be substantially taut when the upper portions of the body plates are substantiallyat-thel-imitof their outward swinging movement.
5. A wheeled figure toy comprising a body member, a wheel supported shaftcarried by the body member, a cam-member fixed to the shaft, a rockinglever carried :by the body'member and contactingwith the cam member, means for constantly'urging the rocking lever into contact with the cam member, and an' upstanding plate carried by the upper portion of the lever and extending above the body member.
6. ,A wheeledfiguretoy as comprised in claim 5 wherein the body'member comprises spaced side plates with the cam member and lever positioned therebetween. I
