Description

Aug 7, 1945. 'J. G. FRIEMAN UNDERGARMENT' Filed A il 1 INVENTOR. f
g rojmi *thefsurface bf said legportions} due 'to'lines" of I stressesimparted to the 'shields"'b'y the form of t'l'i'e garment bo'dy' t'dwhibhthey "ar attache whenwormf 1 'Heretoforegi'it has bee'ii customary to"em ploy chafingshields as a separate garmentysaid shields having a number of elastic band'stdh'old them'in place' and over or under other nether garments.
Not!- only is this arr'arigeme'nt cumbersome, but
heating mwarm weather, uncomfortable, and
tends to iifipedecirculation; For these reasons, it
is one of my main objectives to provide a single garment which not only combines the shield feature, eliminating all bands, but obtains the snug fitting result by so designing the body portion v and shields themselves as to apply the stresses to the shields as above mentioned.
A further important feature of this new garment resides in the provision of what I call, for the purposes of this description, an elongated crotch insert or panel arranged in approximately the central part of the shield extending from the .front to the rear, but more upwardly at the front over the lower pubic region than up the back.
This crotch insert is a flat panel preferably composed of an absorbent .or fabric layer on the inside and a waterproof layer on the outside for absorption of moisture and other sanitary reasons which will be readily apparent, and, therefore, need not be herein discussed. However, I do not The present invention relates to improvements D rArENr OFFI E w,
. UNDERGARMENTI i .JacobfqiFriem-an,Tiffimohio I g, 1; i Applicationnpril 2s, 1943; Serial ism- 484,893 .fjl ffaonnns- (01.24224) "Figure-1 is a front elevation of the article"disclosing'its application to the body of the wearer Figure 2 is a' detail plan view of the shieldand panel "sections previous to connection with the body section of the garment; Figure 3 is a detailsection through the' panel insert, taken on'theli'ne 3-3 of Figure 2; and
- Figure *4 is a" fragmentary sectional View on the line 44 of Figure 2. a v fLik'e reference characters designate correspondin'g-parts iflthe'isev'er'allfigure's of the drawing.
9 In carrying 1 out "the construction hereinbefo're premised, 'I 'pr'efer'to embody these improvements in a pantie form of unitary garment, to be composed of threefprimary sections, the body portion wish to be confined to the use of two different Q materials for these layers, since they may both be the sametype of smooth fabric, such as that from which the body is formed, and thu havedouble the absorptive capacity where absorption is most necessary. 1
- lithe "shield "section crotch insert *3? g I Figure 2 ,-these las'ttwo sections are shown alone in pl'an view 'a-nd' comprise two comple- 2, and the sanitary panel-or mental and correspondingly shaped wing portions,
-21; and 2b stitched together with a transverse innerseam 4 "and having the central sanitary panel 3 let into'the seamand conriectedto'thewing portionsby the externally felled seam 5. Before attachment of thepanel, the'materialof the shield where it is to be connected to the sides of the panel is shirred as shown in Figure 2.
The shaping of this shield section 2 is important so as to properly arrange the stretchable material at the crotch portion of the body and extending downwardly between the legs of the wearer along the inner side of the thighs to fully cover the parts which more or less rub against each other in walking. Thus this section prevents chafing as well as absorbs moisture.
The manner in which this shield section 2 is connected to .the body portion I, is also important. An internally felled seam 6 extends at the front from the point x to the point y and likewise at the back, to give a smooth, flat outer surface while the remainder of the edge of the crotch portion is mechanically stitched, at 1, at each end portion with alittle shirring so as to reinforcethis edge and reduce stretching thereof to the minimum, if any. This causes a cupping of the material, functioning as hereinafter explained.
' Now it will be observed that the body portion l at the median vertical plane at'the side of the respective hips extends from the elastic waist band 8 down about to a point 2: just above the bulge of the hips which are mostly uncovered and from the points a the mechanically stitched edge 2 extend diagonally along the tapering points 2 to the points a: and y at the front and back to form an aligned continuation of the stitched edges 1 of the crotch section 2, by which arrangement the shield edges are stressed and caused to be held snugly against the inner surface of the thighs, providing a smooth snug fit to the garment throughout the whole of its lower extremity which would be difiicult from a practical standpoint to be obtained without the use of the special cut and hip arrangement of the stressing edges 2 of the body portion and the biasing of the material in the wing portions 2a and 2b relative to the body portion I, as more or less indicated by the lining on Figure l of the drawing. No moisture, therefore, can pass downwardly of the legs beyond the shield.
In Figure 3 is illustrated a section on the line 33 of Figure 2 through the crotch panel to show the inner layer 3a and the outer waterproof layer 3b.
The material of the body portion I may be knitted rayon or the like with the lines of the weft running vertically as shown in Figure 1 to give the lateral stretch desired. The shield section is made of similar material, but the weft lines thereof run on a bias, as also indicated in this figure, allowing limited stretch to conform to the rounding of the leg contour while snugly holding the shields against the surfaces of the legs.
Thus the garment embodies the structural features in one unit which are only found, if at all,
in separate garments, to take care of natural leakages, perspiration and chafing, without any bands excepting at the waist.
While the specific details have been herein shown and described, the invention is not confined thereto as changes and alterations may be made without departing from the spirit thereof as defined by 'the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A pantie type garment of the class described, comprising abody portion terminating at the sides at a point above the major cross dimensionof the wearers hips, and a crotch section connected thereto and extending downwardly at the inner sides of the. crotch so as to provide shields for preventing chafing, when the garment is worn, at the inside of the legs, said shields extending partly about the legs at the front and back thereof and leaving the legs otherwise uncovered down from the point above the hips aforesaid, the bottom free edge line of the body section being connected to the crotch section at points substantially centrally at the front and back of each leg so that said edge line aligns with the free edge line of the shields at the front and back of the legs to thereby impart stress to the bottom of the shields and hold said shields snugly against the inner surface of the legs.
2. A garment as set forth in claim 1, wherein the bottom edges of the body and shield portions at front and back are provided with a finished stitching along continuous diagonal lines from the. hip to the inner part of the legs to stress said lines and maintain the snug fit of the shields about the legs.
3. A garment of the class described, comprising a body portion of stretchable material having its weft lines running substantially vertically, and a crotch section connected thereto and ex tending downwardly to form chafing shields at the inside of the legs with their weft lines slightly biased, the free edges of the body portion and the chafing shields of said crotch section being stitched in alignment and sufficiently low to transfer stresses from the hip portions of the body to the lower edges of theshields to thereby cause the shields to snugly fit the contour of the legs of the wearer.
4. A garment as set forth in claim 3, wherein the shield section is formed of correspondingly shaped wings extending from the center of the body at the pubic and crotch regions to a point substantially below the crotch along the inner surface of the leg, combined with a central moisture absorbing panel insert.
5. A garment as set forth in claim 3, wherein JACOB G. FREEMAN.
