ROBERT FLOCKE, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
LOCK FOR TRAVELlNG-BAGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,037, dated February 22, 1881.
Application filed December 20, 1880. (Model.)
Io all whom 'it 'may concern:
Beit known that I, ROBERQL` FLOCKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locks for Traveling-Bags, of which the following is a specification.
My invention rela-tes to that class of locks which are formed of a cast bed-piece with loops for holding the handle-rings and a separate case for holding the lock. mechanism the two being united together and riveted to the bagframes; and my invention consists of the lock' case formed with downwardly-projecting end pieces, which may close or partially close the ends of the case, in combination with the bedpiece, constructed with openings for the end pieces of the case to pass through, and with locking-bridges; and it may also have corner zo or-strengthening supports, which at the same time may act as guides or supports to the corners of the case when in position on the bedpiece; and also in the construction and combination of the parts, as hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of the lock. Fig. 2 is a plan view of cast bed-plate, and Fig. 3 is an end view of the lock-case. i
The bed-plate A is formed with the abutting end pieces, a. These lend pieces are formed with the loops c`for holding the rings of the handle. The casting may be strengthened by the corner-pieces b, and the openings d are formed through the bed-plate, through which the end pieces of the lock-case pass, and the lower edge of the abutting pieces a form the bridges '12, over which the end pieces of the case are clinched.
The lock-case B is stamped up or formed of a properly-shaped blank of sheet metal having the necessary openings for the catches and the key for operating the lock, and is provided with the downwardly projecting fingers or pieces c, which may close, or partially close, the ends of the lock-case, and which may leave the openings e', into which the corner-pieces b fit when in place on the bed-plate. The lockcase holds the ordinary locking mechanism and key-bolt, and one of the end pieces, e, forms the support for the lock-spring. The lock-case being thus formed, it is united to the bed-plate by passing the fingers cthrongh the openings d in the bed-piece, clinching them over the bridges i. The parts are thus secured together without the use of screws, rivets, or other fastenings.
The bed-plate is formed with the screw or rivet holes w in the end pieces, by which the lock is secured to the bag-frame.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The bed-plate A, formed with the abutting end pieces, a, the bridges i, and the openings d, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The bed-plate A, formed with the abutting end pieces, a, and with the bridges t' and openings d, and with the corner-supports b, substantially as described.
3. The bed-plate A, formed with the bridges i and openings d, in combination with the lockcase having the clinching-fingers c, substantially as set forth.
ROBERT FLOOKE.
