This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for the molding andv casting of articles such as billets, ingots; blooms, bars or other-ar- The primary object of this invention is'the provision of molding apparatus primarily adapted for the molding of billets which will' enable the casting of a plurality of readily separable 'billets eirciently and economically Withoutany unnecessary Waste of the molding materiali A further object of this invention yis the'provisionof a'mold apparatus for the molding 'of billets or-ingots in which the molding space iS so e'iiiciently arranged as to eliminate the waste of the Imolding material. The bottom wall F includes a base portion 30 and upstanding `corner anges 3| at each corner and Palong each side thereof to provide movement limiting means for the interfitting of the side plates B, C, D and E thereagainst.
The top wall G is generally formed the same as the bottom Wall. It has a top wall body 40 with corner ilanges 4I along each side thereof to provide sockets for receiving the corner portions o-f the complementary assembled plates B, C, D and E in the relationship shown in the drawings. The top plate G is formed different from the bottom plate F in respect to a' centrally disposed rectangularly-shaped pouring opening 50, which opens above the space provided by the facing surfaces 6I of the partitions 22. This opening 50 may be as shown in the drawings or formed otherwise. Preferably, the opening 50 has communicating grooves 52 diagonally radiating from the corners thereof and extending over the billet forming cavities 65, 66, 61 and 68 formed at the junctures of the side plates of the' mold; these grooves facilitating not only the pouring of the material in the mold but the complete filing of the mold cavities without air pockets, etc., l.

These webs 80 are so slender as to permit of relatively easy fracture thereof, and thus separation of the billets `fromY each other,
As .shown in the drawings, the molding apparatus is` capable of producing live billets of substantially uniform size.
` Means is provided to hold the Vwalls B, C, D and E in their complementary assembled relation. This means may consist of angle brackets 90 and 9| welded along the outer side surfaces ofY each of the -wall plates. In assembled :relation the angle plates 90 and 9| of adjacent mold plates cooperate to receive adjusting bolt means 92 of any approved nature. In this manner the plates ymay be efficiently laterally clamped together.
`The top and bottom plates are provided with means for clamping Vthe same together upon ,the
top and bottom edges of the mold. This means fmay consist of hooks 95 and 96 welded -to the bottom and top plates respectively of the mold apparatus, at opposite sides of the mold apparatus. Rods 91 and 98 may be -detachably connected upon these hooks and adjustably` secured together by means of a turnbuckle'arrangement 99 so that the top andfbottom plates may be clamped securelyv in-placeupon the side walls or plates .of the mold, as shown in Figures land 2 of the drawings. i

In a folded arrangement of billets, ingots, blooms or like molded articles, the combination of a central billet and` a plurality of billets surrounding the same and'connected therewith -by relatively thin frangible webs, the centralbillet being relatively highenand extending above the top surfaces of the other billets and being connected at .said extension with the top surfaces of the said other billets by means of fracturable web iianges.
