My invention relates to a mold. for founding metal and it has particular reference to a chill of the type disclosed in my co-pending application, for patent filed J an. 31, 1927, Ser. No. 16%,777, for manufacturing heavy liners for ball and rod mills, the objects of the invention being to provide a simple and inexpensive mold which will eliminate all skilled labor and save all material now needed and required in making san'd molds, thereby reducing the cost of production of cast articles and effecting a considerable economy in time.
Another object of the invention is to provide a permanent mold by which the articles or bodies founded will be uniform in weight and free from any of the imperfections usually encountered in casting articles in sand molds.
The accompanying drawing illustrates a preferred form of embodiment of my invention and therein Fig. 1 is aplan View. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation, the section being taken on line 22Fig. l, and Fig. .3 is a section being taken on line 33-Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow. Similar reference characters on the drawing denote similar parts.
Referring particularly to the form of the embodiment of the invention which is shown in the drawing, my improved mold comprises generally two sections 1 and 2 formed for'mutual cooperation to produce the design, shape or outline desired of founded articles or bodies, suitable means being provided to convey the melted metal into the mold formed by sections 1 and 2, whereby the casting operation may be accelerated and the melted metal may be evenly fed into the mold. In casting heavy articles of the classmentioned this is necessary to obtain and insure an even texture and grain in the cast products.
The section 1, which is the base or bottom of the mold, is substantially rectangular and is preferably provided with longitudinal and transverse members 3 and 4 respectively, which support the base 1; but it will be obvious that these supporting members 3 and 4 maybe omitted. The section 1 is provided with front and rear. upstanding walls 5 and 6 respectively, and the sides of same are open. The upper face 1 of the section 1 constitutes the bottom of the mold imprint, which as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, respec- 1927. Serial No. 196,845.

This section 2 is provided with downwardly extending side walls 8 and 8 which, when the section 2 is closed uponthe section 1, rest upon the plane surfaces 6 which adjoin the imprint face 1 of the bottom section 1. The respective ends of said section 2 are open, as shown in Fig. 2 and the section 2 is of less longitudinal extent than the base section 1, as shown. The ends of the section 2 are arranged to be closed by plates 9 and 9 which are held in place against the open ends of the section 2 by wedge members 10, which are arranged to be inserted between projections 11, preferably provided on said plates 9 and 9, and the frontand rear upstanding walls 5 and 6 of the section 1. The plates 9 and 9 are also provided intermediate the ends thereof with spaced, outwardly directed lugs 12 and 12 respectively between which are arranged to be set and removably held in place by wedges 13 and 13, gates 14 and 14, the bottoms of'which are arranged to extend through openings 9 and 9 respectively in the bottom ofiand preferably centrally of the plates 9 and 9. The gates 14' and 14? are each provided with a sprue 14 and 14 and may be made either solid and of metal, sand or any other suitable material, or may be composed of sections, as shown in Figs. 1 and. 3.
The section 2 as shown in Fig. 3 is formed to produce theshape, outline or design'of the upper part of the founded product, and is provided with a tapering opening 15 which penetrates the top thereof for a core 16 of metal or sand to formv in the finished casting an aperture for the accommodation of a bolt, screw or other device by which the, product founded in the mold may be attached.
What I claim, is: v
1. A mold comprising a base section having frontand rear walls, a top section cooperating with said base section and open at its respective ends and provided with down wardly extending side walls arranged to rest upon said base section, removable closures for the ends of said top sections; and gates arranged for removable connection with said closures.
2. A mold comprising a base section having front and rear Walls, a top section open at its respective ends and provided with side Walls arranged to rest upon said base section, closing means for the ends of said top section, means to hold said closing means in position, and gates removably connected With said closing means and communicating with said mold through the closing means 7 thereof.
3. A mold comprising a base section, an open ended top section co-operating With said base section to form a mold chamber, removable closures for the respective ends of said top section, means for securing said closures in position, and gates carried by said closures and having the bottom thereof extended through said closures.
