Claims.
This invention relates to hair curlers. One object of the present invention is to pro vide a hair curler which comprises a rod or mandrel on which the hair is wound and held temporarily preliminary to the transfer of the coil of hair to a holding device such as for example a bobby pin, said hair curler also having a clamping member swingably mounted on said mandrel, the construction and arrangement of the mandrel and clamping member being such as to simplify the manufacture and assembly of said mandrel and clamping member.
Another object of this invention is to provide a hair curler which is constructed to receive a hair holding device, for example, a bobby pin or thelike, in such position in relation to the curler as to allow the curler to be rotated while the holding device is held stationary during all or a part of the rotation of the curler for winding the hair thereon.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a hair curler of the type described which is constructed and arranged to facilitate the winding of the hair on the mandrel and the transfer of the coil of hair from the .curler to the holding device as well as to facilitate the disengagement of the curler from the coil of hair in transferring the latter to the holding device.
A further object of the invention is to construct and arrange the mandrel and clamping member in such manner that the curler is formed of a small number of parts which are easily assembled in operative relation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hair curler having a mandrel and a swingably mounted clamping member held in operative relation to the mandrel by spring means which also biases the clamping member into clamping relation with the mandrel.
A yet further object of the invention is generally to provide a hair curler of improved construction and operation.
The above and other objects, features and advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the following description considered in connection with the accompanying illustrative drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side view, on an enlarged scale, partly in elevation and partly in section of a hair curler embodying the present invention;
Figure 2 is a side view, in elevation, of the hair curler taken at right angles to the view of Figure 1; Q
Figures 3 and 4 are sectional views on the lines 3-3 and 4--4, respectively, of Figure 1;
Figures 5 and 6 areside view of the curler illustrating the manner of using the same;
Fi ure 7 is a view similar to F ure l showin anothervform of the invention;
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the clamping member of the curler illustrated in Figure 7; and
Figures 9 and 1.0 are views similar to Figures 1 and 2, respectively, showing et another form of the invention.
Referring now tothe drawings in detail, the hair curler l0 embodying the present invention comprises a mandrel or cylindrical rod formed as here shown of the interfltting parts 12 and M. said mandrel is preferably made of a plastic but can be made of any other suitable material. sheet metal or other suitable material is mounted on said mandrel in swingable relation thereto for movement into. and out of clamping relation with the hair which is wound thereon preliminary to the transfer. of the coil of hair to a holding .device, such as for example, a U-shaped spring member l8 here shown as a bobby pin as illustrated in Figures 1 and 6.
Referring now more particularly to the construction of the mandrel formed of the parts 12 and 114, themandrel part .12 is provided with a longitudinally extending opening or bore 20 and the mandrel part it is provided with a reduced endportion 22 which fits snugly into said bore 2.0. The mandrel part l2 is also provided with a side opening or slot 24 which leads into the bore 20 from one side of the mandrel. The other part ll of the mandrel is provided with a longitudinally .extendingrecess or opening 28 which is open at .one end of the mandrel to receive the leg 28 of the hair holding device I8.
The clamping member 16 comprises a longitudinally extending part 30.which is .curved transversely, as illustrated in Figure 4 and conforms to the curvature of the mandrel. Said clamping member is provided near one end thereof with a laterally projecting part or tongue 32 which, as here shown, is formed by striking the same from a part of said clamping member. Said tongue 32 extends into the bore 20 of mandrel part l2 through the slot 24. Spring means hereshown as a compression spring 36 is positioned in bore 20 of mandrel part l2 and bears at one end thereof against tongue .32 of the clamping member and at the opposite end thereof against the end surface 38 of reduced "portion 22 of mandrel part l4. Tongue 32 is provided with a portion 40 A clamping member .16 formed of which projects into spring 36 axially thereof for more securely holding the clamping member in connected relation to the mandrel, said portion 40 preventing movement of the tongue out through slot 24. The mandrel part I 2 is provided with a recess 42 to receive the end portion of the clamping member when the latter is pivotally moved or swung outof clampingrelation to the mandrel as illustrated in Figure 5. It will be noted that the end portion 44 of the clamping member, from which the laterally projecting part or tongue 32 is struck out, forms a finger piece to facilitate manipulation of the clamping member in moving the same into and out of clamping relation with the mandrel.
It will be noted that the clamping member I6 is held in position on the mandrel for pivotal or swingable movement with respect thereto by the spring 36 and that in the pivotal movement of the clamping member the tongue 32 thereof engages the edge 46-0f the mandrel part I2, at the slot 24, as a fulcrum for said clamping member. Spring 36 not only serves to hold the clamping member I6 in swingable or pivotal relation to the mandrel but also biases the clamping member into clamping relation with the mandrel and resiliently holds the latter in said relation as well as resiliently opposing movement of the clamping member to its retracted position out of clamping relation with the mandrel. Thus spring 36 is operatively connected to the clamping member for securing the latter in operative relation to the mandrel.
Upon the insertion of end portion 22 of mandrel part I 4 into bore 20, spring 36 is partially compressed and thereby holds the clamping member I6 in clamping relation to the mandrel and permits, upon further compression thereof, the movement of the clamping member to its retracted position out of clamping relation with the mandrel. Mandrel part I4 may be maintained in removable relation to mandrel part I2 while secured to the latter against unintended removal by the snug fit of reduced end portion 22 in bore 20. "However, it is within the scope of the pres.- ent invention to provide additional means for securing the mandrel parts to each other, for example, by screw threading the end portion 22 of mandrel part l4 and the adjacent surface of bore of mandrel part I2 or by inserting a pin transversely through mandrel part I2 and portion 22 of mandrel part I4, to prevent rela tive longitudinal movement between said parts, or by adhesively securing said portion 22 to the adjacent surface of part I4.
In the form of the invention illustrated inFigures 7 and 8, the hair curler IIIA comprises a mandrel having a tubular member or part 50 which extends for the full length of the mandrel and which provides the latter with a longitudinally extending opening or bore 52 for the spring 54. A cylindrical rod 56 is fixed within said tubular member 50, being secured therein in any suitable way, such as for example, being tightly fitted in the tubular member or adhesively secured therein. Members '50 and 56 are preferably formed of a plastic, for example, cellulose acetate, and if desired rod 56 may be secured in member 50 by fusing the adjacent surface of said members to each other by heat or by a solvent for the cellulose acetate. Rod 56 is provided with a longitudinally extending recess 58 which is open at one end of the mandrel to receive the leg 28 of the bobby pin I8 in the same way as illustrated in Figure 1 with reference the hair curler I0.
The clamping member 60, which is preferably formed of sheet metal, has a longitudinal transversely curved part 6 I, conforming to the curvature of the mandrel and is provided at one end thereof with a lateral part 62 which projects into the opening 52 of the mandrel through the side opening 64 which corresponds to the opening 24 of the hair curler I0. The spring 54 bears at one end thereof against said lateral part 62 of the clamping member and at the opposite end thereof against the adjacent end 66 of rod 56 and resiliently holds the clamping member in clamping relation to the mandrel. An operating member 68 is slidably fitted within tubular member 50 and is movable longitudinally thereof formoving the clamping member 60 to a retracted position out of clamping relation with the mandrel as illustrated in dotted lines in Figure I. Said operating member 68 is provided with a cylindrical portion 10, which fits within the tubular member, a reduced integral portion "I 2 forming a peripheral shoulder 14,
, and an integral end projection 16, which extends into an opening I8 provided in the lateral part 62 of the clamping member. Said operating member is also provided with an integral reduced end portion 60 which projects outwardly of the tubular member and forms a push button for the operating member. A collar 02 is secured to the adjacent end of the tubular member 50 in position to engage the peripheral shoulder 84 of the operating member 68 for limiting the movement .of the latter to its retracted position. It will be understood that, the clamping member 60 is movable to its retracted position against the action of spring 54 by pressing on push button 80 of the operating member 68 and that when pressure on said button is released, the spring 54 moves the clamping member into clamping re- .lation with the mandrel.
having a longitudinally extending recess 92 open at one end of the mandrel to receive the leg 28 of the bobby pin I8. The other end of the tubular member 86 is closed by a cylindrical part 94 which has an integral projection96 adhesively or otherwise fixed to the inner surface of the tubular member. The clamping member 88 comprises the main longitudinally extending part 98, which is curved transversely to conform to the curvature of the mandrel, a lateral part I00 which projects into the longitudinally extending opening 'or bore I02 of tubular member 86 through the side opening I04, and a laterally offset longitudinally extending part I06 which has a reversely bent laterally extending portion I06 which projects through an opening IIO formed in the tubular member 86. A spring H2 is positioned within the opening I 02 of tubular member 86 and bears at one end thereof against the inner surface of part I08 of the clamping member, the other end of said spring being received in a recess II4 formed in the inner side of the tubular member 86, opposite to the opening IIO through which said part I08 of the clamping member projects. It will be understoodthat said spring 2 resiliently moves the clamping member 88 into clamping relation with the mandrel and-resiliently opposes movement of said clamp-- ing member to a retracted position out 'of I said clamping relation, and that said clamping mem-- her is movable to its retracted position by'pressure applied to the part I08 of the clamping member against the action of spring I 12; In assembling the parts of the hair curler 'l0B,'the clamping member 88 is placed in position before the part 94 is attached to the tubular member- 86. 'More particularly, said clamping member is inserted through the open end of the tubular member which is thereafter closed by said partv this invention to form said tubular member in two pieces secured to each other along their adjacent longitudinally extending edges, in which case, the clamping member 88 can :be mounted in position on one of said pieces before it is se-- cured to the other pieces.
It will be understood that in theuse of the hair curler Ill, for example, the end portion E of a strand of hair H is positioned. .betweenthe retracted clamp l6 and themandrel of the hair curler, as illustrated in Figure 5. Then the clamp is allowed to move into clamping relation withthe mandrel to hold the hair on the mandrel, and:
then the mandrel is rotated to wind the hair thereon and around the clamping member as illustrated in Figure 6. It will be understood further that the bobby pin or other holding device it is mounted on the mandrel as illustrated in Figures 1 and 6 before the hair is wound on the mandrel, so that upon the completion of the winding operation the bobby pin is in position to receive the coil of hair between the opposite legs of the bobby pin, when said coil of hair is moved longitudinally of the mandrel for transferring the coil of hair to the .bobby pin and for disengaging the hair curler from said coil of hair and from the bobby pin which thereafter holds the coil of hair.
Further it will be understood that the recess 26 in the mandrel permits relative turning movement between the bobby pin and the mandrel when the latter is rotated for winding the hair thereon, so that the bobby pin can be held against turning movement during all or any part of the rotation of the mandrel whereby to wind the strand of hair close to the head without engagement of the side or leg 28 of the hobby pin with the head, thus permitting the strand of hair to be wound into a coil for substantially the full length thereof from the head to the free end of said strand. It will be understood that the hair curlers A and WE are used in the same way as just described with reference to hair curler 10.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that the latter may be embodied otherwise than as herein illustrated or described and that in each of the forms of the invention herein disclosed certain changes in the details of construction and in the arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the underlying idea of the invention.
