The dial comprises outer and inner s 'ifening plates t and 9, respectively, which are adapted to be mounted upon the ange 6 of said hub and abutted against the shoulder l Ithereof so as to retain said plates in concentric relation to :the axis of' the dial. The inner or central portion ofithe plates 8 and 9r contact each other andl said plates are held inplace by a central clamping disc I0 which 'overlies the inner portion of said plate 8 and which is secured to the hub 5 by screws II. Before the plate 9 is assembled with other elementsof the dial, as shown in Fig. 4, the peripheral portmn M thereof, which is slightly'bent so as to be at an angle to the portion I3 `and in a plane paralolset inwardly with respect tothelatter portion so that when the stiffening plates are brought together and assembled, as in Fig. 3, said plate 9 will be exed from its normal `condition and thus placed under tension to cause its central or hub"portion to exert outward pressureagainst the adjacent central portion of the plate 8, .thereby increasing the stiffeningefrect of the combined plates. A series of openings I5 may be provided inthe portion I3 of the plate 9 so 'as to materially lighten said plate and economize in the amount of material used. 4
To complete the dial, there is provided an index ring I6 of narrow width relative to th-eover-all diameter of the dial, and. which maybe made of a plastic having translucent characteristics so that when thev outer surface is coated with a masking paint in accordance with standard practice and the index markings Il are engraved about its periphery, these markings will be clearly visible whenA the dial is illuminated from the back or underneath side thereof.- Said ring I8 has its inner portion disposed between the plates' 8 and 9 and is secured to said plates by ,any suitable means such as a series of rivets I8 which also accomplish the purpose of xingrthe outer portions of the two plates relative to each other.
