Patented June 19, 1945 CLOSURE FOR HANDBAGS 7 Gus Green, New York, N. Y. H
- Application November 1, 1943, Serial No. 510,822 7 3 Claims. (.01. 292-17) This invention relates to closures for handbags,
pocketbooks, andother receptacles, and 'has for its principal object the provision of a device which may be composed in whole or in, part of plastic, and which will provide a simple, effective and sturdy closure.
The invention contemplates the provision of a so-called snap lock applied to the bagframes, the elements or parts of said lock being integrally formed with parts of theframes, whereby simplicity in construction as well as ease and econ-.- omy in manufacture is assured,
The invention further contemplates the provision of a bag frame composed of a pair of hingedly-connected'frame members provided with elements in the form of face plates arising from said frame-members, said face plates being formed with turned-back tongues constituting locking '1 loops, which in the closed position of the bag are sprung past one another with a snap action to retain the frame members together, or the bag in closed condition. 7
In the accompanying drawing, wherein, an illustrative embodiment of the invention is I shown:
Fig, l is a front elevation of a bag frame, provided with the improved closure means; I
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a face view of one of the frame members, with a part of the same broken away to dis- Fig. 4 is a face view of one of and Fig. 5 is a'plan view of the same.
The improved closure means is preferably adapted for use in connection with handbags,
pocketbooks, and similar receptacles of the character in which the body of the bag is attached to a pair of hingedly-connected frame members, said members being shown at I and 2 and connected by the hinges 3 of conventionalform.
Secured to the inner face of each of the frame members I and 2 at the top thereof is a face 7 plate. That shown at 4 is'secured to the face of the frame member I by the screws 5 or similar fastening means, while that shown at 6 is similarly secured to the inside face of the frame member 2.
The face plates 4 and 6 are preferably composed of plastic or some similar material. The frame members I and 2 may also be of plastic, or of wood, metal, or any other material suitable for the purpose. Also, while the face plates 4 and 6 are herein disclosed as being attached to the frame membersl and 2 by screws'or other fasthe face plates;
tening elements, it will be obvious that said plates f may, if desired, be formed integrally with the frames.
When the bag is closed, or when the two frame members are broughttogether as in Figs. 1 and 2, 'the two face plates are in contact. Each face plate is provided with an integrally-formed .top part 1 extending above the top of the frame member on which the face plate is secured, said top part I being provided with thelocking means to be described. Said locking means consist of two looped elements 8 and 9, one of each of which is formed on the top parts 1 of theface plates 4 and 6, respectively. The manner in which each of the loops 8 and 9 is formed will be apparent from Fig. 4, wherein it will be seen that the face plate 6 therein shown is initially a flat strip of plastic or similar sheet material, longitudinally slitted as at lfltoprovide a tongue III. Said tongue I I is folded or turned back into a rounded loop 9. The loop 8, integrally formed on the I tirely possible to provide the other face plate 4, is similarly produced, the loops so formed being oppositely disposed and provided with the ornamental free ends or tabs I2.
The position of the two loops relative to one another is such that whenthe bag is closed to bring the two frame members I and 2 together, the loops will be sprung past one anotherwith a snap action, and will remain in such overlying relation to constitute a snap closure to hold the bag closed. To open the bag merely requires the imposition of sufficient spring one past the other. I
In the form shown in the drawing, the closure members, consisting of the loops I! and 9, are in-' dicated as being located on, and formed integrally with, the face plates 4 and 6, said face plates being attached to the frame members by screws It is, of course, en-
or other fastening means.
locking members directly on the frame members, in which case the frame members material.
While the locking loops are herein shown as being of a certain design, it will be apparent that the design thereof, as well as other features, may be materially modified without departing from the spirit of the invention. I A
What I claim is:
1. A closure means for handbags and the like having a frame member including a. flat face plate.
extending for the length of the frame, said plate having an integral upward continuation provided with a free-end part doubled back upon itself in 7' pressure on the loops to can also-be of plastic or other and extending for the full length of the frame and being in abutment when the bag is closed, each of said plates having an integral upwardly extending part in the same plane as the face plate, said part having a free-end portion doubled back upon itself in a complete open loop, each loop having an outturned tab portion, the loops in the two plates being sprung past one another with a snap action when the frame sections are in closed position.
