The outer end portion 24 of the cam slot I9 is substantially equal in width to the thickness of the cross bar l8 and accommodates said crossits inner or blade clamping and, at the same time,
the blade clamping plate is held against swinging movementabout the pivotal connection 2| between the rod l5 and the arm 20 due to said rod by the edges of th blade II. It may also be pr0- being held against lateral movement relative to cap-piece 21 which covers the outer end of the handle I2 and which is exposed to have finger pressure applied thereto to shift said rod I5 inwardly relative to said handle and thereby shift the blade clamping plate I3 from its blade clamping position to its blade releasing position as shown in Figure 4.

At the same time, as the cross bar I8 is moved inwardly from'the outer end portion 24 of the cam slot I9, the curved connecting portion 26 of said cam slot cooperates with said cross bar to shift the same laterally relative to the'handle I2 into the inner end portion 25 of said cam slot as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4; However, the cross bar I8 may shift laterally relative to the handle I2 only by swinging aboutthe pivotal connection 2| between its arm 20 and the rod I5 due to said pivotal connection 2| being constrained by said rod to travel only in a straight line longitudinally relative to the handle I2. Manifestly, therefore, when the rod I5 is shifted inwardly the blade clamping plate l-3'not only is moved longitudinally of the razor away from the blade II and the guard plate I, but is swung laterally to expose the blade for free and easy removal and replacement. On the other hand, when finger pressure upon the cap piece 21 is relieved, the spring 23 acts to return the parts to their blade clamping positions.
It only is necessary to swing the blade clamping plate I3 throughan angle of approximately forty-five degrees, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4, to afford all necessary access to the blade I I for its'free and easy removal and replacement,
and within said angle of swinging movement of said clamping plate the same is under positive control by the cam slot I9 and the pivot 2|. desired, however, the rod I may be shifted inwardly until the cross bar I8 is entirely free of the outer end portion 24 of the cam slot I9, in which event the blade clamping plate I3 is free to swing to a position at substantially right angles to the handle I2 as shown by full lines in Fig. 4. But immediately the rod I5 is released and the spring 23 moves the same the short distance required to cause the cross bar I8 to re-enter the portion 24 of the cam slot I9, return swinging movement of the clamping plate again is under positive control by said cam slot and the pivot 2|.
Without further description it is thought that the features and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and it will of course be understood that changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the invention and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A safety razor comprising a guard plate to support a blade, a handle fixed toand extending inwardly from said guard plate, a plate to clamp the blade against said guard plate, a bar fixed with respect to and disposed inwardly of said clamp plate and extending transversely relative to said handle, a rod guided for longitudinal movement and held against lateral move- 'ment relative to said handle, and a pivotal connection between said rod and said bar whereby said clamp plate is movable outwardly from and inwardly to-its blade clamping position by outward and inward longitudinal movements of said rod' relative to'said handle, respectively, said handle having therein a slot of substantially L-shape in which said bar is disposed and with which said bar cooperates in response to outward movement of said rod to swing said guard plate laterally to blade releasing position and in response to inward movement of said rod to swing said clamp plate laterally to blade clamping position, said slot opening through the side of said handle to permit ready assembly of said bar and said clamp plate as a unit with said handle and said'rod.v
2. A safety razor comprising a guard plate to support a blade, a handle fixed to and extending inwardly from said guard plate, a plate to clamp the blade against'said guard plate, a bar fixed with respect to and disposed inwardly of said clamp plate and extending transversely relative to said handle, a rod guided for longitudinal movement and held against lateral movement relative to said handle, a pivotalconnection between said rod and said bar whereby said clamp plate is movable outwardly from and inwardly to its blade clamping position by outward and inward longitudinal movements of said rod relative to said handle, respectively, said handle having therein a slot of substantially L-shape in which said bar is disposed and with which said bar cooperates in response to outward movement of said rod to swing said guard plate laterally to blade releasing position and in response to inward movement of said rod to swing said clamp plate laterally to blade clamping position, said slot opening through the side of said handle to permit ready assembly of said bar and said clamp plate as a unit with said handle and said bar spring means constantly urging said rod and said clamp plate inwardly,. and means for finger engagement to move said rod and said clamp plate outwardly.
