4 Claims. 01. 29-246) This invention relates to a cable terminal lifter for batteries whereby the cable terminals can be I easily and quickly and safely lifted from the battery posts without injury to the battery or to the cable. l 1
It is an object of this .invention to provide a battery cableterminal lifter having a handle with a jaw on one end:thereof and another jaw :slidably mounted on the handlewith a second handle member pivotally secured to the free end of the slidably, mounted jaw and having a pivoted member adapted to project downwardly alongside the first handle member for engaging the top of a battery post, thetwo aforementioned hooks being adapted by closing of the handles towards each other to pas beneath and engage the lower surface of the cable terminal while the downwardly depending pivoted member attached to the top most handle is adapted to engage the top of the post of the battery, whereby the pulling power is derived for quickly lifting the terminal of the cable from the battery post. It is another. object of this invention to provide a cable terminal lifter for batterie having a handle pivoted to a jaw slidably mounted on the other handle, and the other handle having ajaw on one of its ends, and the topmost handle which is pivoted to the end of the sliding jaw having a plunger pivotally secured thereto, and adapted to engage the top of the battery post so thatthe jaws may lift the terminal from the battery when the handles are moved toward eachothen;
Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the terminal lifter associated with one of the posts of the battery;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the reverse side of that portion of the terminal lifter which engages the post of the battery, and showing the handles moved towards each other;
' Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken along the line 33 in Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the apparatus shown in Figure l I Figure 5 is a bottom plan view of the apparatus shown in Figure 1, and looking upwardly. Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral III indicates a handle member having a downwardly and inwardly turned hook I I on these rivets, and on each side of the handle I is a pair of members I4 and I5, each of these members, I4 and I having slots I6 and IT therein which are penetratedby the projecting ends of the rivets or stud l2 and. The outer ends of the rivets or studs I2 and I3 have washers l9 and loosely secured thereon as the ends of the rivets I2 and I3 are bradded or enlarged toloosely confine thewashers I9 and 20 on each end thereof. The members I4 and I5 project downwardly and then. inwardly and are welded together at their lower right ends as shownin Figure l to provide a hook I8. The left-hand end of members I4 and I5 have pivoted therebetween as at 22 an upper handle member which has a rivet l4 penetrating the same, and pivotally mounted on rivet 24 is a U-shaped member which projects downwardly on one side of handle 23 and member l4, and isdoubled backbeneath the members I4 and I5 and beneath the handle I0, and the other leg 25a is secured onrivet 24 at the opposite side of the handle member from that shown in Figure 1, this point of attachment being shown in Figure 2. The pivoted member comprising leg 25 and 25a is loosely mounted around the portions I4 and I5, and is confined for limited movement by means of the rivets I2 and I3 and washers l9 and 20.
The free ends of one or both of the handles l0 1 and 23 has cut therein a cavity 21 which is adapted to be used as a wrench for engaging the nut on the'cable terminalwhich is not visible in Figure 1, but which is a conventional nut for binding the cable terminal to the battery posts. The

In operation the apparatus is adapted to be used by spreading the handles apart as shown in Figure 1, which separates the jaws II and I8 and causes the parts to occupy the position shown in Figure 1. In this position, the jaws are almost in contact with the terminal post 28 of the battery, and when the upper handle is pressed downwardly while the lower handle is held in stationary position, or in other words, the handles 23 and III are moved together at their free ends, the depending member 25 will engage the top of the battery terminal 28, and this will cause the jaw I8 and members l4 and I5 to slide to the left in Figure 1, and the jaws I I and I8 will engage the terminal posts and move upwardly against the lower surface of the cable terminal 29 and when further pressure is applied to close the free ends of the handle, the depending member 25 resting against the upper surface of the battery terminal post 28 will cause the cable terminal 29 to be lifted upwardly off the post by the jaws l8 and I l as the downward pressure of the pivoted member 25 will cause relative movement between the jaws l I and I8, and the lower end of the depending member 25, and quickly and easily lift the cable terminal 29 from the battery post 28 without any side stresses being exerted on the battery post, and without damaging either the cable terminal 29 or the battery post 28 and the battery of which it is a part. v
In the drawing and specification, there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention, and although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only, and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being defined in the claims.
I claim:
1. A batter cable terminal lifter comprising an elongated handle member having a downwardly and inwardly projecting jaw on one end thereof said jaw and handle member being one rigid piece, a member slidably mounted on the handle member and having a downwardly and inwardly projecting jaw integral therewith and being in spaced relation to the first-named jaw, a second handle member pivotally secured to the member having the second-named jaw, and a member pivoted intermediate the ends of the second handle, and projecting downwardly between the jaws whereby when the free ends of the handles are moved towards each other, the pivoted member will engage the top of a battery post, and the jaws will move beneath the cable terminaLso that as the ends of the handles are moved further towards each other, the jaws will lift the terminal from the post.
2. A battery cable terminal lifter comprising a handle member rigid throughout its length and having a jaw integral with one end thereof, a second jaw slidably confined formovement longitudinally of the handle member in a horizontal and vertical direction, a second handle member pivotally secured at one of its ends to the second jaw member, and having a depending portion pivotally secured to an intermediate portion thereof and extending below the first handle member, and being disposed between the jaws.

A battery cable terminal lifter comprising an elongated handle member having a downwardly and inwardly projecting jaw at one end thereof, a pair of spaced bolts penetrating the handle member, and projecting from each side thereof, a pair of members extending along a portion of said handle member and having slots therein, which are penetrated by said bolts for slidabl confining said pair of members on the handle member, said pair of members terminating at one end in downwardly and inwardly directed portions which are joined together to form a second jaw, a second handle member pivotally secured between the ends of the pair of members remote from said second jaw, a U-shaped member surrounding said pair of members and the first handle member, and having its upper free end pivotally secured to the handle member.

A cable terminal lifter for lifting cable terminals from battery posts comprising a handle member having a downwardly and inwardly turned jaw on one end thereof, a pair of members disposed on each side of the handle member adjacent said jaw, said pair of members having a longitudinally disposed slot therein, and an angularly disposed slot therein, a pair of bolts mounted in the handle member and slidably penetrating said slots, said pair'of members projecting downwardly and inwardly in spaced relation to the jaw on the handle member, and being joined together to form a second jaw, a second handle member pivotally secured between the free ends of said pair of members, a member having one leg pivoted intermediate the ends of the second handle member, and projecting downwardly between the said bolts, and around and below said pair of members, and then projecting upwardly and having its other leg secured to the same pivot as the first-named leg, whereby when the handles are moved towards each other, the laws will be moved towards each other, and will also pivot relative to the first handle member and the pivoted member on the second handle memher will engage the top of the battery post to provide a fulcrum for causing the jaws disposed beneath the cable terminal to lift the terminal from the post.
