Description

July 26, A CONRAD CONNECTER FOR CONNECTING THE CABLE TO A BATTERY POST Filed Feb. 27. 1931 I 5 A? Jr/Zzzr [522' A ltorney Inventor Patented July 26, 1932 U ITED sures PATENT OFFICE ARTHUR CONRAD, OF CEESTEB, ILLINOIS Application fled February 27, 1881.
' This invention relates to a connecter for connecting a cable to a battery post, the general object of the invention being to rovide means whereby a cable can be easi y and 5 quickly attached to a battery st or removed therefrom without dan er 0 damaging the battery or cable and wit out the use of 'tools.'
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combina- 10 tion and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawin and specifically pointed out in the appends claims. 1
In describing the invention in detail refll erence will be had to the accom anying rawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding arts throughout the several views, and in w ich:
l i re 1 is a fragmentary plan view showto inggt e invention in use.
i igure 2 is a plan view showing the device in open position.
Figure 3 is a side view. Figure 4 is a section on line t t of Figure 3.
a Figure 5 is a view of the compensating de- 'VMNB in this drawin the numeral 1 indicates the body oi the device, which at one end is termed with a tapered socket part 2 to receive the strip end of the cable 3 and its other end the member is formed with a jaw oi semtcircular shape. it movable jaw memher it is pivoted between the perforated ears 6 feed on the part 1 by the pin '5? and the gripping part oi the movable jaw also suhetantielly mmi-circular in shape so that the two jaws term a circular opening tor receiving the post 9 of the hattery 18% as shown in Figure l. A holt 10 passes through a hole in the-part l and through an enlarged hole it in the shank oi the movable jaw h and the huh 112 on the lever 13 is threaded on the threaded end of the bolt. A compensat ing lever 1 is pivoted to the body part 1 as shown at 15 and is located on the opposite side or" the hody part to that on which the movable jaw is pivoted. This lever 14 is formed with a notch 16 in one side thereof Serial No; 518,842.
and the side of the lever through which the notch passes is beveled as shown at 17.
This lever is adapted to engage the headed end of the bolt with the notch 16 receiving the bolt as shown in Figures 1 and 4.
In applying the connecter to a battery 0st the lever 13 should be in the position w ere the threaded hub 12 thereof is moved toward the end of the bolt and the compensating lever 14 swung from under the head of the bolt. This position of the parts will enable the jaws 4 and 5 to be moved to open position and readily passed over the battery post.
After the Jaws are placed in engagement with the post, the compensating lever is pushed by the thumb on the finger part 14 thereof so as to cause the beveled portion 17 to pass under the head of the bolt and thus cause the bolt to enter the notch 16. This will move the bolt outwardly so as to move the threaded end and the hub 12 of the memher 13 inwardly and thus part1 close the jaw 5 toward the jaw 4. Then t e lever 13 is' turned to cause the hub 16 to move toward the head of the bolt which will apply pressure to the movable jaw 5 and cause the same and the j aw 4.- to firmly grip the post as shown in Figure l.
When the device is to be removed from the bolt the lever 13 is turned to release the pressure of the hub on the movable jaw and then the compensating lever is swung out of enga ement with theheaded part of the bolt so that the jaws can be swung apart and thus release the post.
lit is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
it is to he understood that changes may he made in the construction and in the comloination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope oithe ap ended claims.
Having thus descri ed my invention, what I claim as new is:
l. A battery post connecter comprising a body part having a stationary jaw at one end thereof. means for connecting a cable to the body part, a movable jaw pivoted to the body part, a bolt passing through the 2 aaaaaae jaws, a nut member connected with the 4 threaded end of the bolt, and a compensat ng lever pivoted to the body part and having I a portion for fitting between the head of the 5 ho t and the adjacent side of the body part. 2. Means for connecting a cable with a battery post comprising a body part, a jaw formed at one end of the body part, means for connecting a cable to the other end of the body part, a movable jaw pivot-ally connected to the body part, a bolt passing through the body part and the shank of the movable jaw, a lever having a hub formed with a threaded bore for engaging the threaded end of the bolt for applying ressure to the movable jaw, a compensating ever pivoted to the body part and having a notch therein for receiving the headed part of the 3. Means for connecting a cable to a battery post comprising a body part of elongated form and having a substantially semicircular jaw at one end'thereof, a cable connected with the other end thereof, a movable jaw comprising a shank and a substantially semi-circular jaw part for cooperating with the other jaw part for engaging a post, a bolt passing through the body part and through the shank of the movable aw,
a lever having a hub formed with a threaded bore for receivin the threaded end of the bolt, the inner en' of the hub contacting the shank of the movable jaw, a compensating lever pivoted to the body part and having a notch therein with a beveled side at each side of the notch for engaging the head of the bolt for forcing the bolt outwardly whereby the notch art will ass over the shank of the bolt ad acent the ead.
40 In testimony whereof I after my si nature.
