Inventor L /0/VL W/l oe 70/1/ By and v I I Patented Mar. 27,, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SHINGLE CUTTER. I
Lionel W. Norton, Westerleigh, N. Y.
Application January 13, 1944, Serial No. 518,149
3 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cutting machines for shingles, and more particularly to a hand-type device, whereby shingles can be cut at the proper length and width in a quick and convenient manner.
The principal object of the present invention is to .provide such a cutteras above stated with an adjustable center point to the end that when a shingle is about to be cut and has been properly marked at the opposite ends thereof, the movable cutter blade of the cutting device is let down gently until the center point rests on the pencil mark at one end of the shingle, to the end that with this end of the plate securely held on the pencil point, the front or opposite end of the shingle may be swung around until the pencil mark on the other end of the shingle comes directly under the movable blade, whereupon the shingle can be accurately cut.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following description.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a conventional machine showing the present improved centering means.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary detailed sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing, wherein like numerals designate like parts, it may be seen that numeral 5 for the most part denotes a conventional shingle cutter, numeral 6 denoting an upper frame pivoted, as at 1, upon a lower base frame 8. An actuating frame 9, is link-connected, as at ID, to the base frame 8 and rockably mounted on the frame 6 and caused to force the upper frame 6 toward the base frame 8. The base frame 8 supports a blade II, while the upper frame 6 supports a blade I2 which is interrupted and divided into apair of sections a, b by the presence of the present invention which is generally referred to by numeral l3.
As can be seen in Figure 1, the upper blade I2 has a plurality of adjusting screws I4 and in accommodating the present invention I3, one of these screws is removed for the purpose of I accommodating a centering pin I5, which is substantially longer than the adjusting screws I4 and extends downwardly between the adjacent ends of the sections a, b of the blade I2. The lower end of the pin I5 is pointed, as at I6, while its upper end is threaded, as at I1, projecting into the upper frame 6 where it is provided with an adjusting nut I8. The lower blade II has an interruption or notch I9 therein for receiving the point I6 of the centeringpin I5 when the blades I I, I2 come together.
It will, of course, be observed that the extreme point of the pointed end N3 of the pin I5 is in a plane with the cutting edge of the blade I2 and also the blade II. This centering pin I5 will in no way interfere with the cutting action of the blades I I, I2, but will permit swiveling of the shingle to the end that accurate cuts can be made through asbestos and other materials forming shingles with but a minimum amount of care and effort.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention, what is claimed I as'new is:
1. A shingle cutting device comprising a lower fixed blade, an upper movable blade, a centering pin extending downwardly from the upper blade, and a hand device for actuating the movable blade, said blades and pin being in a common plane. 7
2. A shingle cutting device comprising a lower fixed blade, an upper movable blade, a centering pin extending downwardly from the upper blade, and a hand device for actuating the movable blade, said upper blade being interrupted to accommodate the plum the plane thereof.
3. A shingle cutting device comprising a lower fixed blade, an upper movable blade in the plane of the fixed blade, a centering pin extending downwardly from the upper blade in the plane of said blades, and a hand device for actuating the movable blade, the lower blade being formed with a recess for accommodating said pin when the blades are brought together.
