cclaims. (cris-13s) This invention relates to an improvement in stop .-hingesthat is, .a hinge of the type which embodies in .its construction .means for limiting the .opening movement of the hinge .leaves .and
` which employs for this purpose `a stop plate lying against the ,outerl surfaces of fthe .hinge leaves and slidably interconnected at its .ends therewith.
The .object oi the invention .is .to so .constitute `arid so organize a .stop hinge of this character that when the stop plate .functions to limit the v.
opening movement of the hinge leaves, it takes lthe stresses .set up therein in compression and does this in such an advantageous way that .the full compressive strength of 'the stop plate and of the hinge .leaf structure .is utilized, all of the parts being relieved .of 'bending stresses.
`Another .object of the invention is to constitute f the 'hinge leaves as box-'like structures and so combine the .hinge vbarrels and their pintle pin therewith that .the Stop .plate serves to conceal :them as well as to exert its highly effective action 'heretofore described, This feature also .makes it practical to embody Ithe stop plate in such an ornamental and .complete .form that it serves to conceal the hinged barrel and pintle pin and provide not only astop hinge but a 'hinge of 4cover plate type.
A further object of .the inventionis to provide a hinge having these advantages andycapacities, and which is simple and compact in its construction, requiring `far less parts thanI any stop hinges or cover lplate hinges heretofore proposed, and to accomplish these advantageswhile providing a structure which may be economically produced from materials and by means -of facilities ordinarily available.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features o'f the construction, arrangement, and' combination of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly Abeing had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which:
Figure l is a view in top plan of a hinge embodying the present'invention, fragments of the parts to which the hinge is attached being shown; Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows and illustrating the hinge when `it vis* closed;
. Figures and `A9 Yare 4cross sectional views taken onlines 8-8 and S-f-S respectively of Figure 5; Figure `1.0 is a detail view in `top plan illustrating .the stop plate;r
Figure 1l is a view .similar to Figure 10 but showing the stop ,plate in end elevation; and
Figure l2l is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line YI2.-I.2 of Figure 1 and showing .the bifurcated guide lug of the stop plate in full rlirios as nally assembled, and in dotted lines 4secure the hinge 'leaves to 'the parts to be hinged together. A.stop plate S'iscombinedwith the .hinge leaves'L and L in a manner which will be hereinafter more 4fully described.
` Each hinge leaf has a'body plate I5 substantially at and of general T-shaped outline, as.
illustrated in the drawings. Around its other edges the body plate I5 of each hinge leaf is provided with an integral downturned marginal ange I6, .which flange gives the box-like structure to the hinge leai. With a box-like structure .of this character the barrels B may be .formed .downwardly-#that is, they may be located within or below the plane of the top of the body plate I5 of the hinge leaf.` This way of constructing and organizing the barrels with the hingle leaves is a feature that, permits of 40 the use of aproperly constituted stop plate, and
pointed out in the appended claims, reference Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure '2 but showing the hinge open;
Figure 4 is av view in section taken on line 4-4 of Figure 1 and looking in the ydirection of the arrows;
Figure 5 is a view in top plan illustrating the hinge structure with the lstop plate removed;
`Figure 6 vis a view vin side `elevation of Ithe structure shown in Figure 5;
Figure 7 'is a view thereof vin end elevation;
which also lends the construction to a concealed covered hinge type.
In the body plate I5 of `each hinge'leaf a slot I1 of suitable dimensions and proportions is vprovided.' Each slot I1 is vformed with ats I8,along its side and marginal edges, providing tracks or guides. The outer end of each slot I1 is notched,
.as at I9, and is formed with stop shoulders 2B on each side of the notch. Just in front of the stop shoulders 20 Vdepressions 2| are provided in vthe Itracks 18.
The stop plate S'is of the outline shown in the ydrawings and consists of a flat, rather thick and strong, stir! piece of metal. i For the purposes of ornamentation, and to vserve also as a cover plate, its lsides 22 are extended and of sloping or tapered shape, as shown in the drawings, and its ends are formed' with ldownturned guide lugs 23.
Each guide lug '23 has its lower end bifurcated, as 'at 24. 4In 'the assembly, the stop `plate S is placed 'over the hinge leaves and the guide lugs 23 pass down into the slots I1. After the lugs 23 have been assembled with the slots I1, a suitable tool is utilized to spread the bifurcated ends of the guide lugs 23 so as to interlock them with the hinge leaves L and L', while, of course, allowing relative sliding movement of these parts. On each side of each guide lug 23 the stop plate is formed with stop shoulders, designated at 25 and 26.
With this construction, when the hinge is closed, the stop plate S lies ush up against the hinge leaves L and L in the manner shown in Figures 1 and 2, and presents a highly ornamental appearance with the hinged barrel B and the pintle pin P concealed. When the hinge is open the parts shift from the position shown in Figure 2 to the' position shown in Figure 3. In this position the stop plate is at a forty-ve degree angle, and is lined up with the similarly inclined flanges of the hinge leaves. The shoulders 25 and 2G of the stop plate at this time abut the shoulders 20 at the outer ends of the slot I'l so that the stress or force involved in the bracing or strut-like action of the stop plate S is applied directly to the stop plate. The guide lugs 23 are entirely or substantially entirely relieved of stress and strain. Furthermore, the stop plate S so coacts with the inclined anged formation of the for the purpose of illustration or example, and;
that various changes in the size, shape, and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the 'scope of the subjoined claims,
