Letter A is the base B, the uptake, and O the hopper, forming the whole easing of the aslrsifter.

D is an ordinary inclined screen situated, as shown, in the base and uptake.

E is a rack formed of bars arranged after the fashion of a screen, only that the bars are very wide apart.

F is a shaft with vanes upon it, situated in relation to the bottom of the hopper G, if desired, as shown, on the axle F of which is secured a crank-handle, F

The hopperis provided with a cover, G, which will be, preferably, hinged at the point H.

I is a part of the front of the casing, which is made removable in any ordinary way, so

that any time the screen D and rack E may be got at for repairs, &c.

K and L are drawers situated, as shown, in the base A of the casing.

The operation of the invention is as follows: The cover G is raised and the ashes to be sifted poured into the hopper, when, by gravity, they slide out of the bottom of the hopper, which is arranged to deliver them on one side of the shaft F, only, so that in coming in contact with the vanes of the shaft they act upon it like Water on a water-wheel, so that the shaft and vanes cause a greater distribution or separation of the ashes, and in a considerable measure prevent the upcoming of dust. The crank F is for the purpose of relieving the vanes by turning the shaft backward in case a lump of cinder should get between any of. them and the back of the casing. The shaft and vanes discharge the ashes upon the rack E, which distributes or spreads upon the ashes and cinders, in which opened state they fall upon and slide down and through the screen D, the ashes passing through the screen into the drawer L, and the ciuders slide down it and are received into the drawer K. The said drawers are removed and emptied from time to time, as required.

What I claim as my invention, and Wish to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:

1. The combination of the hopper (J, rack E, screen D, and drawers K and L, all constructed, arranged, and operating as set forth.

2. The combination of the hopper (J, shaft and vanes F, rack E, screen D, and drawers K and L, substantially as set forth.
