UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JORDON LOSEE AND DANIEL MORIARTY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN ASH-SIFTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,027, dated September 30, 1879; application filed March 28, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, J ORDON LOSEE and DANIEL MORIARTY, both of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have made an invention of certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Sifters; and that the following, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description and specification of the same.
The object of the invention which constitutes the subject of this patent is to provide a means for sifting the ashes and disposing of the cinders, and the invention consists of certain constructions and combinations of mechanical devices,which are recited in detail in the claim at the close of this description.
In order that the said combinations may be fully understood, we have represented in the accompanying drawings, and will proceed to describe,the best form in which we have at this date constructed ash -sifters embodying our invention.
Figure 1 of said drawings represents a top Fig. 2 represents a side view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a front view, partly in section, showing the sifter. Fig. 4 represents a transverse section of the box at the line m x of Fig. 1.
The ash-box represented in said drawings is made so compact that just enough space is allowed for the rotation of the quadrangularshaped sifter B. This sifter is secured to journals G O, which revolve in suitable bearings.
The journal 0 projects far enough beyond the box to permit a ratchet-wheel, D, to be secured to it. This ratchet-wheel engages with a pawl, E, which is secured to the box A, and prevents the handle a, which revolves the sifter, from being turned backward.
The sifter is made quadrangular in shape, and one of its sides is hinged, so that it can be used as a door to receive and discharge the ashes, and to secure this door F in place buttons b b are provided.
The ash-box has two covers hinged to it, as seen at G G, Fig. 4. It has also a draw, H, which is used as a receptacle for ashes or cinders, and a flap, I, is hinged directly in front of this draw, so that when the draw is removed the flap prevents the ashes from coming out of the box into the room or yard where the ashes are being sifted. The bottom of the box is made like a barrel-cover, as shown at K, and a flange, J, extends around it, which flange is made so that it will fit the top of a barrel. Bevel-shaped pieces of wood, as seen at L, Fig. 4, are secured to the box to prevent the ashes from lodging on the top of the drawer M when the sifter is being revolved or cinders discharged therefrom.
The operation of the sifter is as follows: The covers G G are raised, and the handle a is turned so that the door F of the sifter is in a position to receive the ashes. The door is then unfastened by simply unfastening the buttons that secure the door in place, and then raising the door. The ashes are then thrown into the sifter, the door F closed and buttoned, and the covers G G closed down. The sifter is then turned by crank a, which imparts a tumbling motion to the ash es, the finer portions of which fall down into the drawer H, which is then taken out and the contents removed. The drawer is then replaced in the ash-.box, the cinders are then removed from the sifter by unfastening the buttons that "secure the door F in place, and then the crank is turned a half-revolution, which will cause the cinders to fall into the drawer. e
If it is desired, the ash-box can be placed over the top of a barrel, the drawer removed, and the fine particles of ashes allowed to fall into the barrel. The drawer can then be put in place to receive the cinders, or the drawer can be used for ashes and the barrel for the cinders, to suit the user.
We claim as our invention- The quadrangular-shaped revolving sifter B, door F, box A, covers G G, drawer H, ratchet D, pawl E, flan gedbarrel-cover K, and flap I, constructed, combined, and arranged substantially as herein described.
