Patented Mar. 13, 1945 UNITED, STAT E N'l OFFICE This invention relates to trunk and cot com binations, wherein a foldable cot, especially constructed for the purpose, is mounted at the top of a conventional trunk, and arrangedin such manner that the cot may be opened out for use as desired, or may be folded up within the top of the trunk and the trunk lid closed down there} over, as in moving from place to place. The prime object of the invention is to provide, in combination, a conventional form of trunk having a hinged lid, a foldable cot frame especially constructed for the purpose and mounted at the top of the trunk, the same being formed of a plurality of open loops pivotally connected together in such manner that the outer or end loops may be folded over inwardlyupon and into the main or central loop which-is anchored at the top of the trunk body, for permitting the trunk lid to be closed thereover, or'so that the said loops may be opened out in the form of a complete cot, and a foldable covering supported upon the cot frame. I Another object of the invention is to provide, in combination with'a conventional trunk having a deep lid hinged to the rear upper margin of the trunk body, a foldable cot frame supportinga foldable covering, and mounted at the upper side of the trunk, the said cot frame including'open, rectangular loops hingedly connected, withthe central or body loop supported at the top of the trunk body-with the end bars of thisloop'raised somewhat above the upper r'nargin of the trunk and set inwardly therefrom forpermitting the trunk lid to be closed thereover, and the opposite side bars of this loop lowered to substantially the level of the said upper margin of the trunk'for allowing the necessary sag room of the cot covering, with the head or pillowloop hingedly or pivotally connected with the rear bar of the body loop for folding inwardly into the body loop, with the thigh l'oop similarly connected with the frontal bar of the body loop andthefrontal ba'r thereof similarly lowered to provide .sag room for the cot covering, this said loop being also foldable 'rearwardly into the body loop, and a-"foot 100p similarly connected withthe thighloop at the outer cross bar thereof and also foldable inwardly and rearwartlly into the thigh loop, and with the latterinto the main or body loop as mounted at the top of the trunk, and supporting legs hingedly or pivotally connectedwith the thigh loop and with the foot loop for folding up into those loops, for enabling the entire assembly to be folded up into the top of the trunk as desired, or to be opened out and extended for useas a cot.

With the foregoing objects ln'view, together with such other objects and advantages as may appear from the following specification, attention is directed to the accompanying drawings as embodying certain preferred structures of the invention, and wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective view ofthe foldable cot frame as mounted at the top of a conventional trunk, the assembly being constructed in accordance with this invention, the lid of the trunk being shown opened and the cot frame be ing unfolded from the trunk and extended as for use, fragments of the cot covering being also shown as marginally secured to the adjacent bars of the frame.

Figure 2 is a fragmental detail on an enlarged scale, for illustrating the method of securing the cot covering to the frame, and forming the margins of the covering atthe junctures of the loops.

Figure 3 is a top plan view on the scale of Figure 1, showing the cot frame as folded together within the upper and open side of the trunk, preparatory to closing the trunk lid thereover, a fragment-of the said lid being shown as in its open I position.

Figure 5 is a detail view-in perspective, of a modified structure for removably supporting the main or body loop of the cot frame within the trunk body, so that the cot may be entirely removed from the trunk for independent use, when desired- This invention is designed for mounting upon any conventional form of trunk, as represented generally at 5, and including the bottom 5a, sides 5b, ends 50, and. the deep lid 5d, hinged marginally by means of hinges 6 to the rear upper margin of the trunk.

The invention comprises a number of rectangular loops pivotally connected, and adapted to fold together intothe top of the trunk, or to unfold therefrom and open out to form an elongated cot frame for supporting a canvas or other flexible covering. The rectangular loops forming the, cot'frame are preferably made of metal tubing for the sake of lightness and strength. These loops include a main, rectangular body loop: referred to generally at 1 and made up of pairs of spaced side barsia and spaced end bars lb, joined bars and to the upper margins of the trunk ends respectively, as shown at 9. The frontal and rear side bars Ia of this loop, however, are dropped or down-set medially, substantially to the level of the upper margins of the trunk sides 51), as clearly shown in Figure l, for the purpose of allowing sag room for thefiexible cot covering, and as will later be more fully explained. However the ends of the side bars Ia are not thus dropped or downset, but remain at the level of the end bars Ib, for the purpose of providing pivot bearings as indiac'ted at 1c. The elevation of the end bars 71) I lid 5d, and so that the latter may close down? thereover.

A reotangularly U -shaped head loop shown gengether at one end of the frame and tied with a bow-knot 28. Thus the covering ma be drawn taut as desired, or may be loosened for facilitating the folding of the loops and covering into the trunk as desired.

In Figure 5 is shown a modified method of removably supporting the cot frame within the trunk, so that the cot may be removed for independent use if desired, or so that the trunk may be used independently.

In this modification the body loop of the cot frame, in lieu of being anchored to the upper margins of the trunk ends, is anchored at its ends to the end boards by the straps 8m and zrivets Brngtthe boards 20 being adapted to nicely slide within theends of the trunk. Socket brackets' 2| are anchored at 22 on the inner sides of orally at I 0, and having its ends turned aside in parallel planes, is pivoted at these turned ends and bending them nicely and freely around the bearings 'lc, as indicated at lb. Thus this head loop Ill may be unfolded rearwardly into the open trunk lid 5d, when the cot as such is in use, or as stated may be folded down into the top of the trunk when not in use.

A similar U-shaped thigh loop ll is similarly pivotally connected at the free ends of its arms to the raised bearings 1c of the frontal side barof themain or body loop I, and the outer or forward cross arm or bar thereof is similarly off-set, or in its opened position is down-set medially, as

indicated at Ila, to correspond with the oilsetting of the frontal bar Ia of the loop I, thus similarly providing the lateral raised bearings portion of the forward bar lIa, these legs being of such 'length'as to fold upwardly into the loop r H, or to open downwardly for supporting the loop II in its open position. Similarly a U- shaped foot loop I4 is pivoted at its flattened ends, as indicated at Ma, to the raised bearings ilb of the loop I I, and a pair of legs I5, cross braced by the straps I6, is pivoted at their flattened inner ends to the cross bar of this foot loop, as indicated at l5a, and these legs are thus adapted to 'fold'up within the loop I I.

A suitable canvas or other form of flexible cov- 'ering I1 is provided and isstretched over the expanded cot frame as thus formed, this cover- "ing'being securedat its margins at sides and ends to the aligned side and end bars of the loops of the frame, in any conventional manner, as by forming a heavy marginal seam 18 around the covering, the latter being cut away as indicated at I9, at the several joints of the loops of the out frame, so as to permit the ready folding of the spirally around the adjacent bars of the cot frame; The ends of the cord 24 are brought tostand upright.

within the scope however of the claim.

I claim: a

In a device of the kind described for mounting horizontally at the top of a conventional trunk having a deep lid hinged to the rear side top marginthereof, comprising a foldable cot frame for supporting a foldable covering and dimensioned as folded to fit within the top of the trunk with the lid closable thereover, the said frame including a closedrectangular body loop for positioning horizontally at the top of the trunk body, means for-supporting said loop in raised position relatively to the upper margin of the trunk'body a -U-shaped head loop pivotally connectedrat the free ends-of its end bars with the rear cross-bar of'the body-loop, the width of the set medially when'intheir extended position for allowing sag room for the cot covering, 'and'legs pivotally connected at their inner ends .to the cross bars of the thigh loop and of the foot loop and arranged to fold'up'thereinto, whereby the entire assembly may be folded up together and within the top of the trunk, with the trunklid closable thereover, or may be extended out longitudinally for use as a cot.
