COMBINATION SACK AND FOLDING CAMP STOOL.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that TILLMAN B. VorrrnmG- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scotland, in the county of Franklin and State of Pennsylvania, has invented certain useful Improvements in Combination Sacks and Folding Camp Stools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
Ina combination sack and folding camp stool, it is the purpose to provide a construction including a stiffening member or seat encased in one wall of the sack, so as to constitute a seat, a portion of the wall of the sack acting as a cover over the stiffening, in conjunction with foldable legs which may be opened so that the stiffening in the wall of the sack may be used as a seat, the legs being collapsible adjacent the sack when the sack is suspended from the shoulders of the user. This combined sack and stool is designed. for use by boy scouts and similar camping organizations, the compartments of the sack being capable of carrying various paraphernalia belonging to a. boy scout Another purpose is to provide folding legs, such as will support the sack approximating a perpendicular position.
Still another purpose is to provide means for holding the legs in different adjusted positions, enabling the elevation of the stool to be arranged at different desired heights when in use.
A further purpose is the provision of means in conjunction with the legs so that, when the user is in the act of opening the legs, the movement of the legs in one direc tion is assured.
A still further purpose is the provision of means for holding the legs collapsed against the opposite edges of the sack, said means consisting ofa rod (which holds the legs open when the stool is in use) in conjunction with notches in side bars of one set of legs, together with depressions in the side bars of the other set of legs, thereby latching the two sets of legs adjacent the opposite edges of the sack.
It is to be understood that the particulars herein given are in no way limitative and that, while still keeping within the scope of the invention, any desired modifications of detail and desired proportions may be made in the apparatus according to the circumstances.
The invention comprises further features 1924. Serial No. 703,467.
and combinations of parts to be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

Figure 2 is a view showing the legs eX- tended and the sack open, the legs acting to support the sack so that it approaches a perpendicular position, whereby the various artlcles may be easily placed in the sack before closing the legs preparatory to carrying the sack.

Figure 4 is an enlarged detail view of one corner of the sack, showing how one end of one of the side bars of one set of legs engages a rod passing transversely through the stiffening of the sack..
Figure 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Figure 1, showing how the legs are held collapsed against the stiffened edges of the sack.
Figure 6 is a sectional view through the combined sack and stool, showing the seat of the stool arranged in a different elevation to that shown in Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the sack as a whole and which comprises the front and back walls 2 and 3 and the sides and bottom 4: and 5. The front wall consists of two pieces 6 and 7 stitched together at their margins, as at 8. The same stitching 8, which fastens the two pieces 6 and 7 together at certain of their edges, also fastens the sides at tothe front. Suitable stitching fastens the sides and bottom 1 and 5 to the back piece.
. The front has an integral closure flap 9 provided with female fastener members 10 which engage the male fastener members 11 on the back piece. of the sack. When the combined sack and stool is used as a sack, the flap overlies the back and is secured thereto by the fasteners. The sides 4 also have extensions constituting flaps 12 which fold inwardly when the flap of the front piece overlies the back piece. The interior of the sack is provided with pockets 13 and 14 which consist of a piece of fabric stitched to one of the pieces of the front of the sack.
In order to use thesack as a stool, a stiffener 15, such as a board or the like, is encased between the two pieces of the front, hence when the sack is disposed in a horizontal position, as in Figure 3, the front of the sack with the stiffener therein constitutes a seat.
Pairs of foldable legs 16 and 17 are provided, each pair consisting of a. U-shaped support or frame. The side arms of both frames are pivoted together, as at 18, so that one frame or support may fold or collapse within the other, as shown clearly in Figure 1. When the legs are so collapsed, the side arms of the legs will lie adjacent to and in parallelism with each other.
The arms of the legs 16 are pivoted at 20 to the stiffening member or board of the sack while the corresponding ends of the arms of the other set of legs have bifurcations 21 which are designed for engagement with the ends of a transverse rod 22 which passes through the stiffener member or board ofthe sack. It will be noted that one arm caused to be formed by each of the bifurcations is longer than the other arm of the bifurcation so that the long arm may engage with the pivot rod which pivotally connects one pair of legs to the stiffener of the sack. This construction is designed for the purpose of causing one pair of legs to open in one direction only, preventing the operator or user from opening the legs in the other direction.
lVhen the bifurcations are engaged with the transverse red, the sack may be used either as a stool or the legs may be used to support the sack so that it approaches a perpendicular position, whereby the user may deposit various paraphernalia in the sack in preparing to move camp. It will be noted that the stiffener which is en cased in one wall of the sack has a plurality of transverse openings 23, so that the transverse rod 22 may pass through any one of the openings 23 for the purpose of holding the seat at various desired heights.
The side arms of one pair of legs are provided with notches 24 which receive the ends of the rod 22 when the legs are collapsed, the extremities of the rod, when the legs are so collapsed, engaging in the depressions 25 in the side arms of the other pair of legs, thereby acting to hold both pairs of legs collapsed.
A suitable strap 26 with adjustable loops 27 has its adjustable loops connected at 28 to the sides of the sack, so that the sack may be suspended from the shoulders of the user.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed is:
l. A. combined sack and folding camp stool comprisinga sack provided with a stiffener encased in one wall thereof, a pair of tl-shaped collapsible legs pivotally united, with the terminal portions of one pair of legs pivoted to the stiffener, the terminal portions of the other pair of legs being detachably connected to an opposite portion of the stiffener, whereby the legs may support the sack with its stiffener as a stool or as a sack, whereby articles may be deposited in the sack.
2. A combined sack and folding camp stool consisting of a stiffened sack and legs comprising U-shaped members, the terminal portions of one member being pivotally connected at opposite sides of the stiffened sack, the terminal portions of the other U-shaped member having adjustable detachable connections with the stiffened sack at a requisite distance from the first pivots, whereby the sack may be supported in different elevations.
3. A combined sack and folding camp stool comprising a sack provided with a stiffener encased in one wall thereof, a pair of U-shaped collapsible legs pivotally united, with the terminal portions of one pair of legs pivoted to the stiffener, the terminal portions of the other pair of legs being detachably connected to an opposite portion of the stiffener, whereby the legs may support the sack with its stiffener as a stool or as a saek, whereby articles may be deposited in the sack, the detachable con nections of the terminal portions of one pair of legs including a rod, and means consisting of notches and depressions formed in the legs for engaging with the end portions and the terminal portions of the rod to hold the legs collapsed.
4. A combined sack and folding camp stool consisting of a stiffened sack and legs comprising U-shaped members, the terminal portions of one member being pivotally connected at opposite sides of the stiffened sack, the terminal portions of the other U-shaped member having adjustable detachable connections with the stiffened sack at a requisite distance from. the first pivots, whereby the sack may be supported in different elevations, the detachable connections of the terminal portions of one pair of legs including a rod, and means consisting of notches and depressions formed in the legs for engaging with the end portions and the terminal portions of the rod to hold the legs collapsed.
5. A combined sack and folding camp stool including a stiffened sack, tl-shaged supporting legs pivotally united, whereby they may collapse one within the other, the terminal portions of one of the U-shaped legs being pivoted to the stiffened sack adjacent one edge thereof, the terminal portions of the other U-shaped leg support having detachable connections with the stiffened sack adjacent an opposite edge, said detachlllf) able connection including a rod, said U- shaped legs having notches and depressions for engagement with the end portions and the terminal portions of said rod for holding the legs collapsed against the stiffened sack which also constitutes a seat.
6. A combined sack and folding camp stool including a stiffened sack and provided with a pair of U-shaped leg supports operatively connected to the stiffened sack, whereby the sack may be supported so that it may approximate a perpendicular position or be supported as a seat.
7. A combined sack and folding camp stool including a stiffened sack, a pair of U-shaped leg supports pivotally united, whereby one support is foldable within the other, means for holding the legs collapsed adjacent the stiffened sack which constitutes a seat means consisting of a pivot rod for pivotally connecting the terminal portions of one U-shaped leg support to the stiffened sack, and means carried by the terminal portions of the other U-shaped leg support for engagement with the pivot rod to enable the legs to open in one direction only,
